Is it too late?

I'm currently awaiting results from the SECAF appeal. Hoping for a fit finding but preparing for unfit. Currently I am rated at 10% for my condition and will apply for LAS if found unfit (I'm at 18 yrs, 9 months now).

Anyway I just found out that I have significant damage to my hip, which has been an issue for a few years. Ironically I got rated 0% for my hip and the AF didn't see a reason to add it as an unfitting condition, even though I had an MRI showing some issues. My most current MRI shows even more damage to the point that ortho is recommending surgery.

My question is.. Is it too late add it to an unfitting condition now that I've passed the formal board stage? I didn't press the issue initially because I didn't think this would even make it past the informal stage without a RTD..

There is a process in the AF where the MEB can be pulled and then restarted. There was a pilot that did this recently, although I don't remember his username but some searching on this site should turn it up.

Just because your hip requires surgery does not mean that your hip condition is unfitting.

The VA rated me 20% for my arm as I cannot use it above parallel with my shoulder line. The medical standards for the Air Force say as long as I can use it at a 90 degree angle all around that is a fully functioning shoulder.

Now a hip should be more common sense as the hip affects, walking, running, lifting, carrying, climbing, etc.

If the VA rated you at 0% for the hip, then you could do your VARR to see what the VA gives you post surgery.

I understand. I didn't get how they cane up with the ratings to begin with. I rated for things that seems trivial in comparison to my unfitting condition. I got 10% for migraines with use of Botox and orals.. I haven't been able to do a cardio part for PT in 2 years and could barely lift my right leg without burning pain, and 0%. I have a torn labrum with osteoarthritis... IDK...

Fran,

I would ask your counsel if a "Recall" would make sense. I dont know too much about how things work past the FPEB stage since Ive never been there. The Recall, if warranted, could also be a way to help you stay in longer to get 20 "the natural way" since it effectively starts your entire MEB over from Day 1.

Hello -

I just finished your timeline and was curious what VARR is and why you requested one. Also, was your misdiagnosis why you nonconcurred so many times? TY!

Yes the misdiagnosis was the reason for so many nonconcurs. The VARR stands for
VA Rating Review. Basically it's an appeal to the VA to provide them the evidence that a specific condition meets the VASRD requirements for a higher rating.
