Is SSDI possible?

Hello all,

It has been a while.

I filed for SSDI after I went through the Medical Retirement process and retired shortly after in June 2016. I was told by SS that I no longer qualify for SSDI due to no work since retirement.
Are there any alternatives, or is this "the end' of my SSDI attempt to receive this benefit?

** Send all and any help possible.

Thanks.

I am confused. Did you get approved for SSDI? Denied? What is no work since retirement mean? If you couldn't work after being medically retired that would be evidence to help you get SSDI.

Sorry, after reading it again, I see where it might need clarification.

Applied for SSDI right after my medical discharge in 2016 and was denied (I was in TDRL until 2020, where I was approved for 100 % Disability P&T).

This past week I called SS to re-apply because my medical conditions aren’t getting better and the lady stated that I no longer qualify because I have not worked in 5 of the last 10 years.

** Cannot work - always had the hope that I would.

I would talk to a SSDI attorney to see if you have a case. When you were denied you should have appealed. A lot of SSDI claims that are denied end up getting approved during the appeals.

Which state was it? California?

Please read the linked story its possible because you were medically retired and had a VA rating at the date of last insured.

Great news so far,

After receiving Provis and Odd pedestrian’s advice, my SSDI process/application with help of a lawyer are underway. Wish me luck!

I will need help filling out the work and functional forms for a better outcome, any help offered will be greatly appreciated.

Functional forms are filled out by your doctor's most won't do them, it's best that your notes reflect the severity of your disability. This is somewhat difficult with VA notes as they tend to be more vague then a private doctors notes. It doesn't hurt to ask though.

Just an update for others trying SSDI. My wife was was denied 2 times now. Within the next few months she will have a hearing before a judge which her attorney told her is a better chance to get approved since most that apply are denied regardless of the severity of symptoms. For those who get approved its great but according to her attorney there is no rhyme or reason why that happens. He's seen iffy ones approved first time and others that were obvious get all the way to the end needing to appeal the court decision.
