Job search while waiting for ratings

Hello everyone,

I am in an AF MEB, got determined unfit/ratings sent to DRAS on 14 Jan. PEBLO said to expect about two months from that date for ratings to come back then two weeks for out processing. That gives me the date of 1 April(ish) as an availability date for a new job. I have a couple of questions for others who have applied for work during this period.

How do you approach this with prospective employers? How much/little do you tell them about when you're available and why it isn't definite? I've been advised not to tell them I'm getting medically retired. Additionally, how long will it be until I see my first paycheck? And what can we do in the meantime to cover the overlap while we're waiting to get paid? It's been a rough year financially, so we don't have a lot in savings.

Thank you for your time.

VA pay arrives 2 months after your last month on AD.
Example
AD in April, not eligible
May, earning benefits
Jun, get paid for benefits earned in May

I would not talk about medical retirement with potential employers, nor regular retirement. The money you have earned is yours and I think to many retirees wrong count that toward their future salary. The new job ought to pay an employee what THAT job is worth. Your retirement is bonus money.

Welcome to the PEB Forum! :)

@chaplaincharlie, thank you for the advice! I will be sure to keep that in mind. Thankfully the transition class was teaching that as well. We were all taught to say we are transitioning from military service rather than retiring, as it gives that different connotation. I am applying for jobs as if I won't ever see that disability check, that way no matter what we are taken care of. A retired PEBLO ingrained that into me when I first started the MEB. Like you said, it's just bonus money.

@Warrior644, thank you! I've been on here for a long time and have gotten some great advice from other people's posts. I finally needed to post something myself!

Indeed, you are welcome! ;)

Being "positively proactive" is definitely the route for success in the DoD IDES process in order to achieve the maximum possible DoD military benefits and/or DoVA disability compensation upon its official conclusion. Take care!

I'm moving to West Virginia, which has huge incentives for businesses to hire veterans, but I can't do much while on AD (I'm currently waiting for my ratings too, and stationed overseas). I've applied for quite a few jobs, after getting training through TAPS, but I don't think entering my APO address on applications is doing me any good; I've accepted the fact that most job hunting will be done on terminal leave.

In my case... I started applying for jobs before getting my ratings and received a couple of replies BUT... since I had no definite day to get out (or even a decent estimate) I was not able to land any of those jobs. Luckily my ratings came back in a week (after NARSUM) and DOD took like 5 days, so now I have a better idea on when I'll be available (which has definitely helped in the couple interviews I've done these past couple of days). I hope you land that job you are looking for! Good luck!
