I completed my VA C&P exams 20Sep23. I am in the IDES process and have 19 years 2 months active duty. Currently drafting my personal letter to submit with my package to the board. What is the rough timeline and when do I meet with JAG to discuss and review my letter? Did anyone submit your PLD request? My JAG is about 1.5 hours from me and they told me it was beneficial for visit because they didn’t have any of my paperwork and records. So they gave me the template for the personal statement in the meantime. I do not have an injury that prevents me from doing my job/rank/pay grade/etc. It is just a medication keeping me from going to a ship and sea duty operational (not allowed onboard ship). Thank you for your help!

Have you considered outside counsel? At 19 years, 2 months there are lots of dollars at stake.

On the other hand the USN leans toward fit for duty.

What did your commands letter say? That will greatly impact your letter’s content.

My commands NMA requested to keep me onboard through retirement date August 2024. If they do find me fit, how does that impact my medication onboard ship and ‘not being allowed?’ I understand almost everything is waiverable, but then why even have me go through this whole process.

The process is divided into two sections 1)MEB and 2)PEB. MEB only looks at retention standards. PEB looks at whole person. The USN PEB leans toward retention. The fact that your command recommends retention is a positive. They go through the process because you don't meet retention standards. Have you already filed for retirement? If so, there is a presumption of fitness.

Then I must still be in the MEB portion having just completed the exams.

I have not filed for retirement, I was expecting at least another 7ish years of service. I was flagged from my sea duty screening after completing Department Head School in Newport, RI. PERS-454 gave initial review of my medical record and said I was unsuitable for sea duty operations.

I can tell you from experience. As a SWO, no matter how good of a letter you get for retention from the chain of command, you will not be found fit on those meds. They need us to be deployable on a ship. Just drag out the timeline as much as you can to reach 20!

I just got my NARSUM and applicable documents today. I am assuming my (7) day timeline will start on Monday? JAG has not reached out to me…my PEBLO sent me the documents through DODSAFE.

Talk to your PEBLO and make sure they are tracking your 20 year mark. I understand that every PEBLO is different, but mine was more than sympathetic about trying to help me delay as long as possible. My PEB met in June and my IPEB was not scheduled until December (and it apparently may not be till Jan or Feb). My 20 year mark is Apr24 so that delay was critical. I found JAG to also be very sympatheitc and helpful (again...your experience may vary). The "system" does not care about your reitrement date, but the people within the system are willing to look at common sense and help you out.

It appears I have been lucky as well. Feb retire date with both JAG and Peblo seeming sympathetic and appearing to do their best to help me get there.

My PEBLO has been really good with delaying as much as she can, so she is on my team. Meeting with JAG this week to go over all my documents and make sure we’re on the same page.

Update to my journey:

I submitted my package to the PEBLO (personal statement with command endorsement/statement, IMR, IMR Rebuttal) this past week. Now the long waiting game for PEB to do their thing.

I am hoping the holidays will help delay this as much as possible. I don’t want this process rushed, so I can get across the finish line of August 2024 for a full 20 year retirement. I will be filing for formal board when that time comes.

What is a rough timeframe for the PEB to make their findings and get back to the PEBLO and member?

What is the rough timeline of requesting the formal PEB?

Thank you all for your help and guidance! I truly appreciate those that have reached out to me separately.

I’m right at two and a half months since sending my package to the PEB and I still have no results. Your package may not of even been sent to them yet. The MEB has to be finalized before it’s sent. You could try to check LIMDU smart on a navy computer when you get the chance.

From what I remember, FPEBs appear to be about a month or two after you request it and there’s probably other ways to try to delay, like taking your full time (I think it’s 15 days) to sign results. I definitely think that it’s doable to extend out to your 20 year point. Especially with terminal leave if you have it.

Also remember that PLD is a thing and worst case scenario you can apply for it. Reaching twenty is very very important if concurrent receipt is something you would qualify for.
