Just recently was told i would be going through a MEB and received my code 37. I'm a ground based controller and DQ'ed for my career field. Currently stationed at Yokota AB, japan. Just wanted to know how or If the process is different overseas vs stateside. I'm not sure if yokota has any VA reps or anything but any input would be greatly appreciated.

I was told this today, also there is a new instruction about being overseas (Navmed Policy 11-005) came into affect 30 SEP 2011
*states that overseas MTF will discontinue generating medical board cases to submit the PEB for the determination of fitness of duty.
*Overseas assigned personal requiring referral into IDES will be accomplished via permanent change of duty station to (Conus) IDES Site.

It goes on to list how the process goes, i was given this today by one of my on base docs.
Im here in yokosuka and find out monday about my PEB and when i will be going to san diago

Bump- any info on if the AF side works the same? Or if anyone else has been through the IDES while in japan or overseas..

Dont know all of airforce rules since im navy but

AIR FORCE INSTRUCTION 36-3212

was a good read alot of policys i dont understand but alot about how the Airforce PEB/disablity and discharge process works. I would just ask to see if there has been any changes to the AF PEB instruction, i got my info from mental health department.

There does not appear to be any similar requirement to process Airmen CONUS:

AFI 41-210:

"4.71.2. Active Duty Airmen may be considered for potential PCS reassignment to an MTF under one or more of the following conditions.
4.71.2.1. Required medical care is not available at the MTF or reasonably available in the local or regional areas.
4.71.2.2. There is overwhelming medical evidence that suggests a SM is not likely expected to return to Active Duty.
4.71.2.3. When hospitalization beyond the SM‘s Date of Separation is expected. (Contact AFPC/DPAMM to request Medical Hold).
4.71.2.4. For overseas SMs; when the required medical care is not available in the overseas area.
4.71.2.5. For overseas SMs; when hospitalization beyond the member‘s DEROS is expected.
4.71.2.6. When HQ AFPC/DPAMM directs.
4.71.3. General Information: Consistent with the needs of the Air Force, the intent of the patient assignment program is to place SMs in MTFs best suited to address their medical needs. Although placement of the member near family or Home of Record may be considered when appropriate, it is not the goal of this program."

The inclusion of language of possible reasons to assign an OCONUS member stateside indicates to me that there has been no change in AF policy about conducting overseas MEBs.

That seems like a waste of taxpayer dollars to me - to pay to have you, your family, household goods, all shipped and permanently relocated just to do the MEB. What if they come back with a Fit for Duty determination, do they pay to relocated you again? Back to Japan? or are you now permanently stationed where you probably DONT want to be (in relationship to Japan being a great assignment for me anyways!!!)? I'd talk with my leadership and ask them if it's possible to waive this or grant an exemption or exception to this rule. May be barking up a tree on this one, but doesn't hurt to ask I suppose.

(I'm Air Force, so yes I don't get the other branche's policies as thouroughly as I do the USAF's)

I got stuck in Misawa and i'm past my DEROS. I have no orders and nothing refreshing my dates. I have a car and storage good s being threatened to be sold. My DEROS was 16 Jun and no one can help with the DEROS stuff. i'm stuck til my MEB/PEB results come back. best part is they lost my stuff so i'm starting over again 1.5 months later. Good luck!

Thanks guys.. Hopefully I'll find a little more out tomorrow when I have my appt with my flight doc
