I’m in a unique situation. So I have been referred for a MEDBOARD but seem to be at a stand still. I got a call last week from my PEBLO asking if I had my retirement letter and I told her yes. I’m currently active duty navy with 19 years 7 months. Will having my letter affect me? I have been reading and following up and asking questions and can’t get a clear cut answer. Do you think they will deny my MEDBOARD because of this or I will have to give up my retirement to go through with the process? Any insight would be much appreciated. Thank you

Yes, once you have a retirement letter there is a presumption of fitness for duty.
For most that hit 20 years AFS the MEDBOARD has no financial gain for them. Some reasons that one would want a MEB even if they were to hit 20 years would be if they had ADSO so getting found unfit will allow them to not have to serve longer than their 20 years or if they believed that they would be found unfit AND that unfit condition would more than likely be found by the PEB to be combat related AND the VA rated that unfit condition at a higher rate than their earned longevity meaning for most higher than 50%. If all of those conditions were to happen then their chapter 61 pension would net more due to not be taxed federally. But even with all of those if's you may be able to get the same compensation if rated highly by CRSC after getting out.
