Medical Hold

Hello Everyone,

I have started the MEB process for DDD and Sleep Apnea. The main problem that I am currently facing is that I am also approaching my DOS on 12 July. I understand that I can be placed on medical hold, however, I was wondering if anyone has declined being placed on medical hold. According to AFI 41-210, paragraph 10.7.11.3 Enlisted members cannot be forced to remain in service beyond their Expiration of Term of Service (ETS). They must agree in writing to a medical hold. For officers, medical hold does not require their consent. Does declining medical hold stop the MEB/PEB process? I have asked my PEBLO this very question and he has given me two different answers. First he said that as long as my package has been forwarded to the PEB, the process will continue. The second time I asked him, he said he did not know what would happen. Any input you have will be very much appreciated.

I'm not sure who told you that enlisted members cannot be forced to stay on active duty for an MEB. That is not true. I know a few people at my base that have been held beyond their EST, for 30 to 60 days at a time, until their MEB was complete

I did find out that an enlisted member can not be forced to remain in service beyond their ETS. I had to sign a memorandum stating that I agree to extend my ETS until the PEB is completed. My ETS has been extended 6 months. I was also informed that if the process takes longer than 6 months, then I can agree to another extension. The memorandum I signed referenced AFI 41-210 paragraph 10.7.11.3.
