Medical Separation vs Medical Retirement benefits

Good Morning All,

I am a Sailor with 7 years of service and I just got my findings back and it seems I have a DoD rating of 20% and a VA rating of 100%, with several conditions deferred. My PEB attorney thinks that if I were to ask for a formal board, that I would easily be able to get 30% or higher.

So, aside from Tricare for the rest of my life, what would the other benefits be in having a medical retirement over separation?

Thanks!

A guaranteed floor of compensation for life. If your VA% were to go down to zero you still get your chapter 61 pension. If you don't get 30% or higher you can't qualify for CRSC meaning you might be able to get the equivalent of both your VA disability AND your earned longevity towards a regular retirement. If medically retired you get the annual enrollment fee waived for Tricare Select. So if you choose that plan not only do you get it but you also get it for free. Separation leaves you with a lump sum severance and then 20% ratings means that when you collect your VA compensation you will have to pay back the severance via recoupment by receiving your VA compensation less 20% VA compensation which is $327.99 subtracted each month or more since that amount I calculated was based of being single. If married and or with dependents the amount less you would receive would be more.

So in my opinion its an absolute no brainer to try to get 30% or higher DOD.
