Just informed my command that I have been referred to a mental health therapist. My command is good with it so far. What are my rights with my mental health care.
Thanks,
Bamakaz

You will have to be more specific. Is it a self referral? Is it a forensic Psych referral? Regardless, there is a duty of the therapist to report if you are a threat to yourself or someone else. The therapist should brief you on what they have to report and what is protected by the client therapist relationship.

It was most likely their PCM for the referral... You need to do all appointments that are set for you and take meds when/if they are perscribed to you. The CoC has to be supportive with MH appointments and conditions, many have recently been punished for harassing Soldiers for going to appointments.

It is self referral. I went to my primary care manager and stated my situation and he referred me to a therapist and put me on meds. Thanks to all for the info.

How does the mental health process work in the regular army. Went to my first therapist appt. and she believes I have bipolar or general anxiety disorder. She suggested to me to research bipolar disorder and we will go from there ie meds and therapy. My job is recruiting. I have been doing this for the last 12 years and believe I have finally came to the end of recruiting. I enjoy my job just want to heal. Will the command leave me along during my treatment or push for me to be boarded. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

When I was diagnosed they automatically started my med board. But I was also hospitalized during the process. I started out like you though. Sought treatment on my own then they wanted to get me stabilized and started on medication so they put me in the hospital. Then they told me due to the medication and diagnoses that it was an automatic med board. I don't know if all bipolar cases are the same. Just my experience.

I have been seeing my therapist once a week for the last month. I received a call from my ncoic that the command needs something from my therapist stating what can I do at work. My ncoic has no clue what form or what to do. I'm a recruiter so it can get tricky with my job( stress) . Any suggestions on the form or what format should I use when requesting info from my therapist.
Thanks

Just have them make it a memorandum/letter format and make it plain and simple; the diagnosis and what the recommended limitations are to be. (Be sure you get a copy of it for a future reference incase you have to do an appeal.)

I have quit going to my therapy appointments because I'm already having to miss so much work for all of these appointments(I too am a recruiter in Houston). I feel like I am letting my team down and they give me hell for it. Always make comments about the time I miss. Very frustrating.

It's none of your NCOICs business. As stated before, the therapist has an obligation to report if you are a threat to yourself or others. Other than that, it is none of your commands business. Your commander can contact the BH department and request an update. BH will release what is legal and applicable to the command. Don't write any memorandums, or try and explain anything. This is exactly where negative stigmas about BH come from. People who don't need to know this stuff demanding to know everything about a very private situation.

Remember, just because you are in the military doesn't mean you give up your rights to HIPPA and privacy. What the command gets is on a need to know and is restricted to a very select group of leadership.
