Hard to say what can happen without more facts. What's your condition(s)? MOS? Current assignment?

As a starting point, refer to AR 40-501 Chapter 3; see if you can find your condition.

Referral to a MMRB does not result in separation, as a technical matter at least. MMRBs are essentially where the soldier is "re-classed" to a more "proper" MOS in light of the soldier's medical conditions. Your rank justifies exploring the option of a MMRB before a Medical Evaluation Board/Physical Evaluation Board (MEB/PEB) referral.

If your condition is to a degree clearly below the medical retention standards in AR 40-501, you may be directly referred to a MEB/PEB. MMRBs may also refer you to a MEB/PEB if the MMRB determines your conditions likely fail retention standards. That said, the MMRB can never directly separate you from service.

The best general advice I can offer is to start reading up on AR 40-501 Chapter 3 and AR 635-40. The better prepared you are for the possibility of a MMRB/MEB/PEB the easier things will be on you in the case you are referred to either board.
