Mood disorder/subclinical hyperthyroidism

Good afternoon all,

I’m just trying to determine my chances of staying in as a nuke and sub guy. I recently have been diagnosed with a mood disorder and have subclinical hyperthyroidism for over 2 years now. I am at a recruiting command so it hasn’t made it to navy medicine yet apparently. I know that any history of hyperthyroidism is disqualifying, but I recently started on gabapentin for the mood disorder which had the concurrent effect of correcting my tsh. Would I still be disqualified for retention? I’m trying to decide whether I submit the PEB/MEB before I am transferred back to sea duty so I don’t have to move my family for no reason. I have been in for 10 years. Also , I currently do hold a waiver already for a suicide attempt within my first 4 years (personal issues)

Given that the hyperthyroidism is subclinical a waiver is a strong possibility. The USN is stingy when it comes to unfit findings.

Thank you for the response. The question here then lies with the medicine. With my prior suicide attempt I was awarded a waiver for submarine and nuclear field duty. According to Manmed Chapter 15 Article 15-103 section 5.ii, “individuals who have displayed displayed suicidalitynin the form of a suicidal gesture or suicide attempt, as defined by a mental health professional, will not be eligible for a psycho pharmaceutical waiver” the manmed generally is for initial physicals, but also pertains to special duty physicals. So with that being said, what I’m worried is that I’ll return back to the boat and immediately become disqualified because I am due both a sub physical and nuclear physical upon return to the fleet. I don’t know how often the MEB/PEB would follow this guidance nor do I understand if they will essentially “continue” on my original waiver.

Hopefully some USN folks will chime in.
