I just have a quick question regarding the NARSUM.

Who is it written by? Is it my PCM? I was just referred yesterday and have been running a million questions through my head. Any other advice is appreciated, im being referred for Chondromalacia however I have some other things that I believe would make me unfit.

Thanks in advance!

The NARSUM is written by a provider in the MEB process at BAMC. If your referring condition is Chondromalacia, then that's what you are being referred for. Basically, your PCM, and the MEDCOM commander at your location will make the determination based on AR 40-501 and that will be what is sent to the MEB. You don't make the determination on what you deem to be unfitting for military service

Sorry I’m confused, what initially triggered my meb was Chondromalacia. I have some shoulder issues that I believe are also disqualifying however this is not what triggered the MEB.

So ive already missed my chance to claim other conditions through the DoD? That is all determined at initial referral to IDES? Or have I misinterpreted what fit for duty is? My understanding is that if you get a DoD rating you are considered unfit.

I apologize for the amateur questions, I have not received any further guidance at this point and am just trying to get an understanding of things. I’m still awaiting the first call.

You don't determine what is deemed disqualifying. When your case is sent to initiate the MEB, your disqualifying conditions are sent as well by using AR 40-501. If you have a shoulder condition, but 40-501 says its not disqualifying, then its not a referred condition. when you do your VA appointments, you will get a phone call from the VA and they are going to go through all your records and list the conditions that they will rate you for. If you have shoulder issues, make sure its annotated so when you do your appointments, they evaluate your shoulder. the MEB is one part, the PEB is another part. The PEB determines whether or not you can continue service. if found unfit, you will be assigned a DOD disability rating. 30% or higher equals medical retirement whereas below 30 percent means temporarily disabled. The DOD rating is a lot harder to get higher as there standards differ from the VA. If you dont get the 30% or higher, you get a severance package that you will have to pay back.
