NDAA 2013 Update

Is there a formula to do the math for this?? Or is is just wait and see as far as what percent of CRSC you receive?

I read the guide for calculating CRSC, but it still wasn't 100% clear to me. Basically they take any of the VA rated conditions that are combat, or instrumentality of war rated. They take each of the ratings and add them together using VA math and come up with a combined rating for CRSC. Then they apply that percentage against the retired pay you should be getting. For example:

VA Rated
PTSD - 50%
DDD - 20%
Ankle Strain -10%
Elbow Strain -10%
Tinitus -10%
Total VA Combined Rating - 70%

Now the CRSC board looks at each above condition you claim combat connection and decide whether you proved to them it is indeed combat connected. They then take all the conditions thet they said yes to, and add them up for a combined rating. They take that percentage and multiply by your DOD retired pay and come up with your CRSC benefit.

PTSD - 50% (combat)
DDD - 20% (not combat)
Ankle Strain -10% (combat)
Elbow Strain -10% (not combat)
Tinitus -10% (not combat)
Total VA Combined Rating - 50%

Take SPC Snuffy's example above of $900 in retired pay.

$900 X .50% = $450

Now his total retired pay looks like this:

VA Compensation - $1459
DOD retired Pay - $0 (because of the offset)
CRSC Entitlement - $450
Total Pay- $1859 per month (tax free)

As you can see there are a lot of moving pieces and math going on. This is what I see when I read the regulation and the CRSC guide.

Once again thank you! You have been a great help!

I read the site. From this, I see that a reservist under 60 with less than 20 years (I am at 19) cannot receive CRSC even if their injuries that resulted in the Ch 61 retirement were 100% combat related regardelss of his/her VA and DOD rating. Bummer!!!! Maybe it doesnt hurt to aplly anyways.
