NMCSD Timeline

Also took my husband 3 months to be found unfit. Active duty USMC officer west coast. Currently waiting on ratings. It has been about 6 weeks since being found unfit. No news yet. I have never heard of officers packages going quicker. Our process has been slow. The whole ordeal actually began with a referral to MEB a year ago. There were some delays due to inpatient treatment etc. I highly recommend applying for VocRehab now. My husband will leave active duty and go right to school.

Okay. The timeline my PEBLO gave me had 120 days on it with different steps along the way. So the 120 days is just to complete and submit the MEB and then once it goes to the PEB it's another 3 months? So all in all it will take 7 months just to find out if I'm unfit?

there is a way to find out if your unfit though your peblo its kind of hit or miss though

My husband found out he was unfit by walking into the PEBLO's office after 3 months had past and asking the PEBLO for his status. The PEB portion may take 7 months, ours is on track to take that long. We found out he was unfit at the 3 month mark by asking the PEBLO. If your case is simple it could be quicker. My husband has a fairly complex case with 25 years active duty. His referral to MEB actually began in March of 2015. So our total timeline will be more than a year. Most likely 18 months from referral to retirement. That is because we had some delays though and had several treatments that delayed the process. C&P's were done in May 2015. Inpatient treatment June-Sept. Finally signed Narsum and submitted to PEB in Oct. 2015. Jan 2016 found unfit. Waiting for ratings.

Wow!! That is really long! I hope everything works out for you all in the end . I have a brain tumor that I had surgery for Oct 15 but unfortunately there is some tumor left. The tumor is in the occipital lobe so it caused me to loose my vision in the bottom right of both eyes. The tumor was benign but since they didn't get it all it could grow back and it could cause my vision to get worse or I could have seizures. They don't want to do surgery again because they are afraid it will make my vision loss worse so they said i would need radiation. This is only if it grows back. So because of the vision loss and the fact that I am going to need serial MRI's they out me for the MEB. I just started on 1 March, I have DTAP 8 March and then I have my first appointment with the PEBLO and the VA on the 17.

Good luck with your case as well. My sister is 10 years post brain tumor and doing great! Your case woulds fairly straight forward so maybe it will be quicker. There was also a backlog this winter as they changed to a new system. Hopefully things will get moving quickly again.

Oh okay. So your knee was your presenting condition for the MEB but then at the VA the found the other conditions to claim? Have you received anything saying that you are unfit?
Yes. Before I met with my VA Rep, I requested my medical record's alta notes and went through it with a fine tooth comb and noted conditions that I could claim. The VA Rep pretty much did the same thing so we almost all of the same conditions listed.

How did you know which conditions you could claim? I had my DTAP class this week and they said for my vision loss that is only 20% so if they find me unfit I will be medically separated vs medically retired. The lawyer at the DTAP class said too that being found unfit really relies on what is put in the NMA. Do we get to read the NMA or is that sent straight to the PEBLO?

My husband went head to toe and listed any and all ailments. Just list them all. If they are uneatable you will not get a rating. Yes, you get to read you NMA before it is sent off. Yes, the NMA is important. It should say your injuries/illness/disability interferes with you doing your job.

@rahollow some commands give you a template for the NMA and let you answer the questions. which is smart b/c the CO doesn't really know that much about your condition besides what he see's on a monthly report, unless you talk to him on a daily basis which could be your case Sir. If it is then that could benefit you. Other commands don't even tell that one was written until you go over everything with the MEBLO before your package is submitted.

My command actually did just that. They sent me the template and had me fill it out and then send it back to them for review. Your timeline seems like it went fairly smoothly after you were referred into IDES. If you don't mind me asking, what was your MEB for? I am hoping that I will find out if I am fit or unfit in that same timeframe.

@rahollow lumbarsacral disc degeneration. I have 2 herniated disc, 2 bulging disc in my lower back, DDD from L2-S1, bilateral sciatica and osteoarthritis in my lower 3 vertebrae.

@ordie4life thank you for sharing. When you were set up with the VA for your C&P did they have you see specialists or was it just a general practitioner?

I saw an ortho doc for my back and my shoulder also a general practitioner and did a hearing exam.

Hi all! Can anyone tell me how you figured out the date that you were found unfit and your package went to the VA? Did you have to call the MSC? My Ebenefits hasn't updated anything yet, but the PEBLO office at Balboa said my package was with the VA and I spoke with a VA Rep via the chat feature on Ebenefits and they also said they had received everything. I was just wondering how you know when that all actually occurred. Thanks in advance! :)

Honestly, I just listed everything. Some of the conditions were no longer active, so the VA rated me 0% for them...which still qualifies as a rating, so I am happy about that. My Command emailed me the NMA, and I completed it myself. Then, I turned it in and it was routed for the CO's approval.

I was never formally notified that I was found unfit. However, when I noticed that I had a historical claim and an open claim in eBenefits, the VA told me that this indicates that I've been found unfit. The date of when the historical claim closes is when the VA sends their rating back to the PEB. Hope this helps.

I can second @BlackRepublic. My findings came back one month after the historical claim close date.
