Hey all,
This is not about me, and I want to just say thank you to everyone that has helped me. I ran into my cousin today, he was actually someone who helped me realize the importance of records and making sure they are correct. He was a Marine for several years as a linguist. When he got out, he did not think much of going through his DD214 and everything, and there wasnt much of a push to make sure things were correct. Probably early 2000s. After he got out of the Guard (he joined after his stint in the Marines), he filed for some things with the VA, and they denied him. They are saying there is no proof he was overseas in the areas he was in. As a Marine from 1999 ish until 2004ish, and a linguist who spoke the language over there, he went many places that were probably a bit crazy. The issue is his orders are general orders for 180 days with no specifics, including no names. He does not have half the medals he earned even wrote a letter to the organizations to have it fixed several years ago. He has never gotten an update. What routes could he go to start getting the proof he needs? A lot of his disabilities ride on proving he was in some of the areas he was in. He gave the Marines his all when he was in, and did some really cool stuff. As an Air Force guy I am a bit jealous, but I am frustrated that his records are not indicative of what he did.
Thanks for any guidance or starting points, Ill pull threads if I can find some loose ones.

If he can gets statements from coworker or supervisors he can file those as proof of "I was there."

I had a post-9/11 deployment. My record was devoid of the dates of deployment. Out of due-diligence for VA disability claims, I queried the VA for the full file of what they knew. I found the dates of that deployment there. Point is: sometimes records aren't where they're supposed to be. Sometimes there's reasonable inference. You were assigned to an organization and there's a record somewhere of that organization's mission, etc.
