Hello, I received medical retirement, i seperated in 2 days. I am worried about the post separation pay. I had to sign up for the SBP, and I’m hoping that dosent mean I won’t get paid from the VA now. Does anyone have any insight on this? I had to sign up for it because I am still married but going thru a divorce and the ex spouse would not sign anything to help me. Any help would be appreciated!

The SBP has to be paid, but at worst it’s a small percentage of your VA disability or pension. It wouldn’t keep you from getting paid entirely from the VA. You just have to pay whatever the monthly SBP amount is. You can still waive retirement pay for VA disability.

Is that something I need to do before I seperate?

Honestly, I don’t remember the process of waiving the retirement pay for VA.

@JMATTK

It is done when filing for VA compensation (on the application).
