PEB results and compensation calculations

Good afternoon,

Can anyone offers some clarification on how retirement pay is calculated for a reservist who is prior active duty (+ a couple of title 10 mobilizations) who has a retirement point total of right about 6800 points (active duty and mobs equals about 16 years) who was found to be 80% disabled (PDRL) by the PEB? DOD website about Military Compensation at: Disability Retirement states "The multiplier percentage is at the option of the member who may chose either the percentage of disability assigned or the years of creditable service times 2½%. In either case, the multiplier is limited to 75% by law."

Is this saying that despite not having 20 years of active federal service, the servicemember can straight up choose to get the base pay average from their high-36 month (about $8500) times their Army disability percentage (80% but capped at 75% by law) instead of taking years of creditable services times 2½%?

Thanks

Hey mongoose, I’m a NG that medically retired, to give a quick break down, we don’t qualify for retirement until age 60. I’m not good with the math on the exact retirement math lingo, but 6800 points is a little more like 18 years. If your thinking that you will get CRDP right away including VA pay since your over 50%, no we don’t get it as you have to have 20 good years, for reservist it’s 7200 points. But, you can apply for CRSC and that will compensate for some of the retired pay but not all. You should have a retirement account soon on mypay and when you do see it, there is a verification pay letter, that will show the amount of retirement pay you will receive at retirement age. You can get Tricare prime health insurance for the family with PDRL, it’s only 600 for the year, I enrolled my family and got rid of my army tech health insurance that was a lot more. Hope this helps out a bit

Hi;

To clarify this: You are going to be Medically Retired. It does not matter that we are reservist. And you will be pay, like you said, with the High 36, as soon as in the few months. I suppose you are a O4, like me, because of the $8500 that you mentioned. It will be, 75% of those $8500.

And DFAS will choose the highest payment for you.

What change about us, is that because we are reservist we do not receive both payments complete. I mean the VA and DOD, you have to offset the one of them. If you have 20 "good years" and 50% VA or more you will receive, at 60 years old, your longevity pay (reservist retirement).

Mr Ron G. can explain more about this.

Hopefully this help, something...
