I'm currently a title 32 full time national guard recruiter. I have been seeing a therapist for the last three years and coming this Jan 16 I have been seeing a psychiatrist and we have been working on my medicine
Trying to get me stable. Have been diagnosed with bipolar 2 with major depression and anxiety. I was taken off some meds that have sent me into the depression again. I have kept this information from my command for the entire time. However, im getting to the point of not even wanting anything to do with military. I have 18.3 years and months total active duty time. So here are some questions after my rambling.

1. When I disclose this to command and they issue a temp profile for pysch will the year start on the army side to see if I improve or will the go straight for fit for duty board.
2. How long is the ides process normally take until you get to the da 199. Reason for this is that I have 1 year and 2 mo's of 1405 time that could push me to 20 years .
I'm asking for some suggestions about being quiet and suffering thru med changes or let the command know and see what they do with me. I have my career on the line trying to make 20 years however, recruiting is tough and is wearing me down.
Thanks for looking at the thread and any suggestions.

It is not so much the profile in it's self but rather the medical opinion of your treating physicians. You can have a temp profile for one day and still be referred to a MEB.

The standards for retention are listed in AR 40-501, for your condition listed it would be chapter 3-32 and 3-33

The IDES has an official published timeline of 295 days, but every case is different and moves along at its own pace. Recently they are getting completed in under 295 days, however this may not be the case for you if you do get referred.

This is the main situation that I see as a hurdle for getting a MEB initiated is that you write as if you have been performing to standard while under treatment.

The causes for referral to a MEB under chapter 3-32 and 3-33 are:

a. Persistence or recurrence of symptoms sufficient to require extended or recurrent hospitalization; or
b. Persistence or recurrence of symptoms necessitating limitations of duty or duty in protected environment; or
c. Persistence or recurrence of symptoms resulting in interference with effective military performance

You will need to demonstrate through your physician that you do not meet retention based upon the criteria above.

Before you do attempt to initiate your MEB, make completely sure that you are able to make the 20 year mark. If you are, one possibility is filing a benefits due at discharge claim with the VA (BDD) and get rated for the behavioral health conditions while concurrently dropping your retirement paperwork.

Thank you gsfowler. I have been performing to standard however, the medicine changes are making it difficult to perform in the recruiting world. This is what concerns me. When they start hammering me about mission i hope the anxiety and the depression are stable. I just don't want to blow a career over getting help. I feel once the medicine is right i will be good to go. The recruiting command may not be so generous in seeing if I get better it is a fine line I have to walk. Thanks for the quick response.

That is a great way of explaining yourself to the physician. One easy and fairly silent way of getting the condition out in the open is to do a PHA online through AKO. Once you disclose the BH condition, they will schedule a Dr to do an evaluation.

I did my pha already and was quiet about it. What would the next step be. I see my civ psych on the 31st and new meds will be introduced. I'm thinking about trying to get meds stable and see how it goes.
