Received My Permanent Retirement Orders Today 6Aug13

UPDATE 6 SEPT 13

AKO account re-established. Took a couple of calls to HRC because the AKO help desk kept asking me about security questions that were clearly not setup on my account. They also kept asking me for my PEBD date?. Too many questions so the AKO dude suggested that I call HRC to get my PEBD date and inform them that my rank was wrong in their systems to include my last name...(SMH not how the hell can AKO database not match up with HRC database).

TRICARE: Enrolled in the Retired Dental Plan which will cost $30 dollars a month. Although, I'm 100% and receive free dental from the VA with no problems. But, the students from the University of Maryland (GOD BLESS THEM) rotate out every year. I like to deal with the same dentist all the time. I will wait to see how it turns out.

DFAS: Contacted DFAS today to find out if my retirement account was setup yet. The nice lady on the phone informed me that they received my paperwork on 19Aug13 and will take 30 to 60 days.

Indeed, it's very good to read that your AKO account was finally re-established; all right! :)

Good deal! Your post-military endeavors seem to be positively progressing; enjoy!

Thus, I quite often comment that "possessing well-informed knowledge is truly a powerful equalizer."

Best Wishes!

Had to call DFAS today. Retirement account still not set up yet. They received my DD form 2656 on 19 Aug 2013. Account should be set up between 30-60 days...smh

Rojo,

Any luck with DFAS? I logged into mypay today and was surprised to see Retiree account but when I click on it there is no information. Not sure its a mistake or if someone is actually being proactive.

Goo luck!

has it been 30 days post retirement or have you received your first retirement payment? you wont see anything on my pay when you check your retirement account until your retirement pay statement is posted

Strange thing is I'm not retired yet. As a matter of fact I don't start out-processing until 28 Oct & start my terminal leave on 9 Nov. I will be officially retired as of 22 Jan....1 day after my 51st birthday---Happy Birthday to me !!! LOL

Was just wondering if its the norm for DFAS to create an account this far out.

Have you turned in your DD 2656 form? They won't start building your account until that is turned in and notorized, also your branch has to send them your retirement orders. So when you get your orders they'd hold get them too.

I have not done the 2656. I'm still waiting on orders.

There is an area on my statement that indicates $238 offset. I will call DFAS on Monday (if I can get through) to ask them the question but wanted you guys opinion

UPDATE
6JAN2014

Well I finally got the dreaded audit letter from DFAS. Basically they calculated my pay from May 2000 up to July 2013, and came up with an offset because I elected VA payments back in 2001 which was way more that the retired pay while on TDRL and tax free. The total came up to be (I was looking for the worksheet but I can't find it right now) . Anyway, It looks like I owe the government $65k the amount of my severence pay. Although my retirement account is set up with DFAS, there is no money going into it because I get monies from the VA which is more than retirement. Not sure when they plan to collect the money looking for a letter from the VA any day now regarding the overpayment. Either way, I plan to apply for a hardship and submit documents supportng an undue hardship on my family or at least make the payments so low that it won't affect my household.

Rojo,

I spoke with DFAS Cleveland and they explained it to me like this:

No monies will be withheld from your account because you elected VA compensation over retirement from DoD. They would however, recoup money if my DoD retirement went up for any reason. For example, if I took a job with the DoD as a civilian and then retired, they would then withhold money. I am still having issues with SBP, even after I elected not to have it. I did this at an RSO office at Ft. Carson as well as sent documentation to DFAS Cleveland.

Good luck with your fight and I will continue mine!

VR,
Frank

It all sounds tricky when it comes to DFAS. I took a severance back in 96 due to RIF. In 2000 the VA awarded me 10% but recouped the payments. I'm hoping that they catch this and will make the correct calculations when doing my audit.

Best of luck !!

UPDATE
8JAN2014

Thanks everyone for your comments regarding the offset monies. I did get my VA monies on the first with no deductions in the amount. On another note, I signed up for Delta Dental for Retirees back in Seot 2013. I got a letter the other day saying that I owe then 90 days for non payment. Apparently when I signed up, they attempted to go to DFAS and collect the montly fee but because I get all monies from the VA and no money from DFAS there was nothing to collect. I ended up yesterday setting up automatic payment from my checking account.

TRICARE Prime is the same as well, you have to pay them via automatic debit every month. But, I elected to pay them the full amount for the year. The TRICARE Prime is sure coming in handy. I was referred to one of the TOP LUPUS experts in the country at JOHN HOPKINS UNIVERSITY LUPUS CENTER. I had my first appointment with here back in early December.

Forr those of you that are going through the PDBR process PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP it does pay off especially the TRICARE PRIME.
