Retirement Move

The army placed me on TDRL in 2010 at which point I took advantage of the retirement move back to my home state. When I am placed on PDRL, will I be eligible for another move? We live in Rhode Island and would like to move to Missouri.

Although I'm not sure of a reference, my guess would be no. Your move after getting out is a final PCS move which you have 1 year to utilize. If you already used your move, it stands to reason that you would not be given another one. It's the same logic as the DD214. You don't get a new one after being moved TDRL to PDRL because you didn't go back in.

Of course if anyone knows differently, please let us know.

Under the JFTR, it says you must have applied to exercise your RETIREMENT move - providing your TRDL OR PDRL retirement orders have moving authorized on it- and you need to apply for this PRIOR to your discharge to EITHER TDRL or PDRL. It doesn't mean you have to move right away, but you do need to apply for this before you discharge to either a temporary or permanent RETIREMENT discharge.

Once discharged on EITHER TDRL or PDRL, you have up to one year to execute your military subsidized move. In some cases, depending on the circumstances, that one post-retirement move can be extended each year thereafter for up to five years post-discharge DD 214 date. Extensions are granted for only one year at a time, you have to apply for an extension every year, and extensions are situationally granted (can't move right away because you have medical treatments/surgery/post-op convo/PT, or, your house is still for sale, or you're in your last year of college, etc.)

Once you are retired, if you have not applied for this movement of household goods or RETIREMENT HOME STATION OF CHOICE PRIOR to your discharge to EITHER TRDL/PDRL, you lose this subsidized option.

It sounds like you used a subsidized move when you went on TDRL and moved from whereever you were to your Home State.

You have already used your option as you used it post discharge while on TDRL.

I assume you are not being returned to active duty, so if you are transferred from TDRL to PDRL, then you will not qualify for another move.

A retirement move is a retirement move, and it doesn't matter if it is used while on TDRL or PDRL. If you have already used it, then you have exhausted that option already.

It's a one-shot deal.

But it's in the JFTR, so read it yourself - just to be sure.

Can you move to a state other than that of your home of record?

PLEASE read the JFTR!

But as I recall, if you are TDRL/PDRL retired, and you have Retirement Home Station of Choice on your retirement orders, you can move ANYWHERE within the lower 48 states.

There are exceptions to this if you were born somewhere else than the lower 48 or your HOR was somewhere other than the lower 48.

Read the JFTR for these exceptions and others.
