Sick leave

Let me start out by saying that I am very greatful for all the information that I have and continue to get. It seems I get the answers here faster and more correct than any other place I look including my unit.
Now for the question:I am being told by my HRO that I can use up my sick leave as a GS because I will be put out on a Military medical. She told me that it would almost be like terminal leave. (don't have to come in they just submit my sick leave every pay period until exhausted) If this is the case do I have to wait until all sick leave is exhausted until I can actually apply for my OPM disability or can that be done in advance knowing when my leave will be exhausted?

My retirement process with OPM stated the day the day the Army personnel management office sent a memo to the state indicating that I would be discharged on the 23 of Apr, my state then requested my final day as a tec to be the 24th of Apr. The letter to OPM was dated 9 Feb. I was still on AD as all this happned so I used one day of SL on the 24th. If your HRO, Tec Pay and tec chain of command will authorize you to use your sick leave you should be able to use it during the time frame between submission of the letter and your last day. I would sure make sure the chain of command is ok with this.

My HRO retirement specialist said that it is okay to use up your accrued sick leave, HOWEVER, as with all sick leave, it must be approved by your local supervisor/chain of command.

In my unit the policy is that a doctor's note can be requested for any time claimed as sick leave. BUT the "general rule of thumb" is that you need to bring in a Dr's slip for missing 3 or more days in a row when you return to work. I had surgery July 07, and all of these rules have been applied to me consistently, even in this time while I wait for OPM to retire me on disability.

I do want to note that I have a great supervisor, so no complaints from me about a program that's been evenly applied to all Technicians. My friend who has severe sleep apnea and is just behind me in out processing was required to bring in a note from his Dr for missing work in excess of 3 consecutive days, even tho he had completed his transfer to the retired reserves.

I asked my chain of command and was told that it was a no brainer. I would have no problem from them taking all my sick leave. (about 4 Months). Asked about having doctors excuse and they told me that being processed through the MEB would cover doc excuse " your are lossing your job because of medical, What other medical excuse do you need?)
So I think I am squared away on the sick leave problem.
Thanks
Chuck
