Starting FPEB process

Hello all,

I just received my ratings (40% AF/80% VA) and I am very happy with them. My issue is that I have 19 years and 6 months of service and want to make it to 20 years to ensure I get CRDP. I have 10 days (until 5 July) to sign my 1180 and was wondering how long the process took to appeal and get a decision back? I am really crunching it to ensure that I meet that 20 year mark. I have spoken with OAC and they are assigning me a lawyer to help in my case. This is really frustrating because I feel that I have put in the time and I am getting screwed out of money that I have earned.

Just ask for permanent limited duty, not sure what its called in the Air Force but I'm sure it is something similar. I had 18 and a half years in when my PEB came back and HQMC approved it no problem but I had to get reevaluated before I was able to retire. Six months shouldn't be that big of a deal.

I believe in the Air Force it is called LAS. LIMITED ASSIGNMENT SELECTION

I was told I was ineligible by my PEBLO for LAS because it is strictly for individuals between 15 and 19 years of service.
This is 100% correct. After 19 presumption of fitness kicks in. If your med board started before 19 years you should be OK

What would your appeal be for? Are you looking to be returned to duty? Do you want to try to get an increase on a rating? Do you want something moved to an unfitting condition? Or is it you want to appeal just to stretch out your time? What about filing a VARR? Do you have additional medical information that could increase one of your referred condition ratings?

In my experience my rating from the informal board was not even close to ideal so I appealed to the formal board and it was about 7 weeks until I was in front of the board. After that I appealed to the SAFPC which took 13 months before they responded. I filed my VARR almost 5 months ago and I'm still waiting. I was just extended and now should be able to retire. It can be a long process if you exercise all of your appeals. Just make sure you are detailed at every step.

Thanks for the response, I to have a couple of issues that I can appeal. I do have more evidence to try and increase a rating for a rated condition or appeal the fact that my initial injury happened in a combat zone.

Apply for the formal board, that will take time. If you're still not close enough then appeal to SAFPC and/or VARR. You'll make the 20+ years. Just be prepared to be extended. My extension was approved 2 months prior to my 20 year mark.
