Take disability over retirement.

Good point Combat Eng!!!

What about CRSC? You could use your CRSC to pay down your debt. Do you have combat related disabilities?

Mike

Yes my back injury is combat related. My PEBLO says I can apply for CRSC if I'm 30% or higher disabled from DOD

Indeed, as to qualify for CRSC, an applicant must:
  • be entitled to and/or receiving military retired pay
  • be rated at least 10 percent by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DoVA)
  • waive your VA pay from your retired pay
  • file a CRSC application with your Branch of Service
As such, CRSC is a program that was created for disability and non-disability military retirees with combat-related disabilities. It is a tax free entitlement that a military veteran will be paid each month along with any retired pay that the military veteran may already be receiving.

Thus, I quite often comment that "possessing well-informed knowledge is truly a powerful equalizer."

I have a similar question. I got 40% Army, 90% VA. So the Army "retirement pay" is showing $895 a month. At 90% VA, I'd get $1,980 a month. So can I choose the VA money? Does that mean I'm waiving my TRICARE and blue ID Card? I'm very confused, plus after reading my 199, I'm convinced they made an error and I should have been under 30% Army and 100% VA. I don't want to re-evaluate everything now as I really need to get out ASAP, but is this something I can re-do later once I'm separated? I'm really confused right now...

Being over 30% DOD means you will be medically retired which means Tricare and retirement ID card, and yes you will get the higher of the 2 which mean you will receive the 90% from VA

Thanks @Combat Eng - I wasn't getting a very clear explanation from my PEBLO.
Not surprising it seems like most PEBLOs are just filling a position. Maybe if they hired more vets we would get a better quality product that cares.

I agree in principle....however, I also think that there is a lack of training, lack of vetting of positions, and (in favor of the PEBLOs who are "rushing" cases) a very real problem with inappropriate pressure to meet somewhat arbitrary timelines. (That is, similar to the VA medical appointment scandal, there is an incentive to get cases done on time rather than an incentive to get cases done right). This is a systemic problem, not a direct failure of the PEBLOs.

Yes there is zero vetting, and it's similiar witht the VA. I have actually been looking into getting a job as a rater due to multiple degrees in the medical field and being senior Medic in Army. They basically said oh you would probably be good at this. But I could never leave up there. The PEBLOs just make stuff up as they go along. Mine has actually told me I have taught her about the process. I'm the guy in IDES, I should be learning.

Ok. I'm at 19 years as of 5 July. I will roll into next fiscal year with 75 leave days. I'm still waiting on my C&P paperwork. I'm tracking it is best to reach the "magic" date if the 20 year mark and therefore get the DOD medical retirement and VA disability. Mind you I can't voluntarily retire or I go back to Ssg, I will keep
My O-3e if forced to medically retire.

Does anyone have any input, feedback or corrections? Particularly if you think I'm going to have issues teaching 20 with leave and ptdy.

ALCON:

Indeed, I am in total agreement on this comment which is very unfortunate for the military service member! :(

That said, please look at my DoD IDES MEB/PEB overall case timeline as one of many specifically valid cases-in-point!

Well, it seems to me that you are continuing to be "positively proactive" which shall definitely yield some favorable military disability compensation benefits at the end of the day! :D

With that all said, in my opinion, please keep up the good work and enjoy life to its fullest! ;)
