Terminal leave, Retirement Pay

I know that if you are allowed to take Terminal leave you are paid basic pay plus BAH and (BAS?).

If you sell your leave they pay only your Basic pay which is taxed 25%.

My question is if you are being medically retired and you sell your terminal leave does it change your effective date of retirement from the date at which your leave ends to the date of your actually leaving, and thus start the retirement pay earlier?

My husbands AF retirement pay will be more then the allowances we are losing thus we would receive more money for retiring and selling the leave then we would for taking the leave and starting the retirement pay later.

I did discuss this with my PEBLO and she stated that they should be able to get my date moved up. I believe they would have to contact Randolph to request it and who knows how long that may take.
Good Luck

There was another member here going through the FPEB portion and hers and my orders came back in exactly 3 weeks. Now this does not mean everybodies will because there are still variables and I believe I was told this could take 4 to 6 weeks. We were cut short on time because they try to put you out between the 23rd and the 28th (not positive on these dates) of the month. You are suppose to get 20 days to outprocess, 20 days PTDY, and terminal leave but mine was cut short by 10 days so I'm outprocessing in 10 days. We recently lost 2 Amn because of PT failure and they only got 1 days notice to outprocess so it can be done.

The 23-28th is a date you can request if you accept the informal results. After a formal, your last day is the last day of the month prior to retirement. Because retirement always starts on the first. and you start getting paid the following month on the first.

I was given 3 days to outprocess, 2 days for household goods, no terminal leave, and my permissive TDY took over a month to approve, 2 days before I started out processing. I had to pay an extra month for my apartment, lost a month of BAH/BAS for not being able to go on terminal because of not knowing if my PTDY was going to get approved, and then my Commanders secretary refused to give me the paperwork, tried to mark off leave and cross out PTDY, after my squadron commander already signed it and said it was right, and tried to make me return to the local area after my PTDY even though I finaled out already. I hate it when people go on these power trips and insist they are right when they have no idea what they are talking about. She kept getting the wrong info because she was telling people at the Personnel office I was separating and not retiring. It took 5 NCOICs from MPF, Finance, Work, and my flight commander to get her to release the paper work. And I asked her to mail me my retirement/Presidential certificates when she received them, and there went another arguement. She said I wasn't getting them and I informed her I was and should have been given an option to have a retirement ceremony from my squadron Commander. I showed her the all 3 regs on the leave, terminal, PTDY, stand alone instead of returning to final out and my retirement certificates/ceremony. And she still argued. Been a grueling past 2 weeks doing all this and moving.

4 more days to my official retirement. Counting down...

It is all so frustrating, we are waiting for the case to come back from IPEB right now. I am assuming that it'll be PDRL 84.88% not sure how they round. Husband's Diagnosis are very straight forward any idiot with the VASRD in hand should be able to get it right. But I had to write a letter for him when the left the soft ball sized hole in his skull of the NARSUM, so saying that any idiot can rate him properly is being a little ambitious I guess. We have been at this for such a long time, I am ready to be moving on. Waiting and waiting I know everyone is in the same boat on that.

Right now I've put an offer on a house but can't prove retirement income because there is no proof to be had for something you aren't getting yet, closing date is at the end of December hope I can come up with proof by then. I spoke to DFAS to find out how quickly they process things apparently what the bank needs is the RAS, retirement and annuity pay statement, processing time is 30 days after they get the paperwork.

I'm also registered to start school in January, in our home town in Washington. It's going to be very difficult for me to start school there if I'm still here in Texas. I've considered taking our four children and moving up there over Christmas break, it would be the best time for all of us. But my dear husband can't take care of himself reliably and couldn't manage for more then a few days without me so it really isn't an option. I do have a friend who offered to keep him but to me that just isn't right.

Balancing the needs of the many against the timeline of the Air Force and the medical conditions of the one. Perhaps our circumstances aren't any more difficult then other peoples but I just want to go out and shake someone and say don't you see what you are doing to my family it's killing us. Just get it over with for heavens sake. It's been almost two years since he was diagnosed and we aren't even done with the IPEB yet.

Heaven forbid if they come back with something stupid that he can't sign and we have to go on to the FPEB I'll end up in the crazy house.

Remember, 75% is the highest retirement percentage you'll receive pay for, even with the 85% rating.

Your husband probably has a good 3-4 months before he will start receiving retirment pay, and that is if he accepts his IPEB results. If he goes to the formal board, you are looking at a good 6-7 months. I started in March, recieved IPEB in June, went to the formal in August, retire Nov 1st and don't receive my first retirement check until Dec 1st. The IPEB is just the beginning....

Hope this helps...

Yeah but his projected last day of the military will be 60-90 days after he signs. Waiting for orders might take a while because of the holidays. Also in order to outprocess, household goods, permissive TDY and terminal leave. And his first retirement check won't be until a month after that date...

Yes but how much control do we have over all of that? PTDY we don't need or want we know where we are going and where we are going to live, either in the house if I manage to close by then or in the my in-laws basement apartment if we don't. We want to sell his terminal leave, out processing can be done in a week, household goods we are DITY moving. So in theory if it all goes well, and I realize it doesn't generally do that, but if it did we could have orders the first week of december, have his effective date of retirement sometime the 3rd week of December. Get his first retirement check February 1st.

If he gets his orders in December, the personnel center would most likely not pick Jan 1st as his retirement date. It would more likely be 1 March or 1 Apr depending on how much leave he has.

Yes. I didn't take it and turned it in. Couldn't take it because my permissive took too long to approve. But they factor all that in when you get your orders. You don't pick the date, It'll be stated in your orders already. I got mine the last week of August with a Nov 1st date. Just because you don't use it, you can't say, so I'm leaving early. Still have to do it at the pace they tell you...

Glad to see you back, didn't want to name drop. The 23rd through the 28th is even after the FPEB. My last day is the 28th of Dec and I wasn't given a choice. I'm told I will receive my 1st retirement check the first of Jan 2012. I have >20 yrs AD and was found 80% and none of that mattered on the discharge date. He will get a chance to tell the PEBLO or the people at the FPEB if he intends to take PTDY or Terminal leave so his dates should (hopefully) reflect that to some degree.

Thanks, he only has 13 yrs in, and we are pretty sure we won't need to do and FPEB, the IPEB should be able to do this one just fine. I'll email the PEBLO and ask him when and who we tell that we don't want to take PTDY and Terminal leave.
