Good Morning,

Has anyone used the TPD program to relieve themselves of owed student loans? I am 100% VA rated and received information from the VA about this program. This sounds awesome as I have used all my GI benefits and currently are using government loans to obtain my MBA. I have less than a year left of school but when I graduate will unfortunately have about $60k in student loan debt. The program sounds almost to good to be true. Thanks in advance

I suspect someone will offer good info to you within the next few hours.

Another good site for veterans (in case you don't find a solution here) is Veterans Benefits Network. Veterans Benefits Network <---LINK

Hi,

Yes, I did it, and is totally true. But you can only discharge the amount of debt until the date of the efective 100% P&T.

Here is the address, Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) Discharge .

Good luck!
Oh man not good the news I was looking for. I received information about pursuing my masters after I got my 100% rating. So just to clarify if I received my 100% rating January of 2018 and I started school January of 2019. Those loans do not qualify for forgiveness unless the loans were incurred prior to January of 2018?

Just got off the phone with Nelnet and was informed that the discharged loans are for prior to and after receiving 100% VA rating. I did not sleep well last night thinking how I f ed that up. Luckily that it is all existing loans, you almost gave me a heart attack.

I received a TPD discharge but want to go back to school. Can I take out more student loans or TEACH Grants?

Yes, but with some conditions.
If you received a TPD discharge based on VA documentation, SSA documentation, or a physician’s certification, you must
  • give your school a letter from a physician stating that you are once again able to engage in substantial gainful activity, and
  • sign a statement acknowledging that you can't get a TPD discharge of the new loan or TEACH Grant based on a disabling condition that already exists when you receive the new loan or TEACH Grant, unless that condition substantially deteriorates in the future.
If you received a TPD discharge based on SSA documentation or a physician’s certification and your three-year post-discharge period hasn’t ended, you must also resume repayment on your previously discharged loans or acknowledge that you are once again responsible for meeting the terms and conditions of your TEACH Grant service obligation.

Sorry, I did not wanted to scared you..jajaja.

But, just in case, confirm that information. Because for something they ask for the date of the P&T.

Just wanted to check and see if your loans were forgiven. I am going back to school and loan forgiveness would be a God send
