TRICARE RETIRED

Before implementation of this program, it was my understanding that a rating of 30% or more from the DOD would allow one to keep current TRICARE coverage. With the new program, does this mean that the same individual at 30% or more will now be forced in to TRICARE RETIRED?

Big difference in cost between TRS and TRR.

I haven't heard of Tricare Retired. Are you referring to Tricare Retired Reserve? My understanding is that that program is for reserve retirees who are not receiving a retirement check yet (ie, not 60). Once you are receiving a retirement check you are eligible for Tricare Standard and Prime. That is my understanding... but as my wife would say, I'm not always right.

Yes, TRICARE Reserve Retired. My nephew is 31 and will eventually go through an MEB/PEB. I just wanted to know if he is rated 30% or more will he be placed on TRR instead of keeping his current TRS. Retired meaning regular and disability.

One of the more knowledgeable folks here can correct me if I'm wrong. My understanding of it is that if someone is drawing retirement checks, disability retirement or regular retirement, they are entitled to TRICARE standard and prime. I think TRR is just for those folks who are retired from the reserves but not yet drawing a retirement check. ie: someone retired after 20 years in their mid 40's but doesn't collect a retirement check until they're 60.

Answer the three questions they ask you and it will begin to filter you down to the correct programs he would qualify for.

I've just been researching this very issue for my own circumstances and it does a good job.

Even tells you what programs are out there for retirees who live overseas!

SSDI plays a factor in the type of program you fall into as well. So if your kin is awarded SSDI, be sure to check it out, too.

Not sure what new program your talking about. I also never heard of "TRICARE RETIRED". Could you post some links.

Dear Xeno:

Please go to www.tricare.mil

They will ask you three questions.

Click submit and the tricare website will assist you in locating the correct tricare plan that fits your scenario.

For my "pretend" scenario, I input that I was retired, living in Costa Rica (i.e., not living in the US or any of its territories like Guam, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands), and unsure of which Tricare policy I currently had.

Then the website began to guide me to the various plans that fit my situation.

For example, I currently receive SSDI, and I now qualify for Medicare Part A and B.

Usually, a retirees PRIMARY insurance is Tricare. HOWEVER, if the retiree is in receipt of Medicare Part A and B, then TRICARE becomes the SECONDARY insurance payer.

And here's something else I found out if you are a retiree living overseas, and are in receipt of regular SSI or SSDI, AND have Medicare Part A and B.

Medicare Part A and B is an insurance program that only works in the US and its territories. Doesn't work overseas.

But the overseas retiree is REQUIRED to continue to pay into Medicare Part A and B in order to have Tricare insurance. How odd is that? Currently, Medicare premiums for me are 110.00 per month and payments come out of my SSDI every month for this program. Roughly, a 10% reduction in my SSDI income for the premium to just Medicare Part A and B, which would not cover me if I lived overseas. But I would still have to pay for it anyway.

Xeno, I cut and pasted this for you here. I chose Costa Rica as my "pretend" overseas country I was "living" in, as Costa Rica has no standing Army or national military to speak of.

Hope this helps you and others. Hope the cut and paste works.
