VA caregiver program

I'm taking a chance and sent the application in while I'm still on AD but I do have proposed ratings. My wife has taken a leave of absence from her job to assist me while recovering from surgery on 8 Aug. We tried to file for Non-Medical Attendant but was told we do not qualify since we live within 50 miles of the MTF (Walter Reed). Needless to say the income has reduced so I figured we can try the caregiver route since she is already a certified caregiver here in Virginia.

Lets see what's happens!!

ROLL TIDE !!!

You can begin the process while on AD but the process won't finish till your a veteran!

My PCM while on active duty filled out the medical portion before I left for terminal leave and handed it over to the VA rep at my WTU who sent it over to the caregiver coordinator at the VAMC I was gonna be attending

Caregiver took the online class and test
Nurse from the VA came and made sure my home was safe (didn't build my house to be handicap accessible so she recommended a lot but I love the challenge of my house not being accessible! Helps with my recovery)
Then caregiver recieved first check the following month on the. 1st

Well not bad news all out as I was expecting us to be denied... The case manager forgot to add us to the review list and now we have to wait another month until the next review board... I guess it doesn't make a big difference anyways if the shutdown continues...

The VA Caregiver Coordinator in Baltimore called my wife earlier this week. She stated that she was confused as to why I requested caregiver because the last time I was seen at the Bmore VA was in 2006...lol....She asked my wife if I'm P&T and she told her yes then she stated well this is confidential information and she needs to talk to the Veteran himself.

Goes to show how updated the system is with the VA. I already have my proposed ratings and will retire in Jan. after terminal leave. I have called the rep back several times but she does not answer. We've waited this long...whats a few more weeks?

Take Care all!!

I would get a second opinion if I was you

I agree, get a second or third opinion on this, my wife applied for this and did everything online, all the tests everything. then they visit the home, then shortly thereafter you receive the stipend. You have already been through a MEB so there is no need to go through it again.

Well, next week my case should be reviewed. Hoping for the best!

Indeed, hoping for the best! :)

Thus, I quite often comment that "possessing well-informed knowledge is truly a powerful equalizer."

Best Wishes!

Well, in a few hours the wife can call to see if she was approved as caregiver, I am not very confident that it will go through. Just my line of thought, keeps me level so if things do go for the negative I don't get so down about it.

Oh thank god! We got approved! Even though it is the lowest tier, it still will help out in a major way. Thank you everyone who introduced me to this program!!!

Outstanding and congratulations!

Indeed, we shall submit an application for my wife too!

I am thinking about having my wife apply for this. I do have some questions though. I am fairly new to the MEB process. you can see where i am at by looking at my timeline. I heard that you could apply while on active duty. I just dont know how to go about this. Also i have read that you need your pcm to fill out paperwork. I am a recruiter right now and see civillian docs so i was wondering if anybody knew if this would be a problem. If anyone can help me out on what to do to get this started and based on my disabilities if anyone has any clue if they will approve it thanks.

If you are active duty the program is called SCAADL.

Once you begin separating I believe you can work with the VA for the VA Caregiver Program which is pretty much the same. I've heard that if you are on SCAADL it can pretty much transfer right over pretty easy to VA Caregiver.

I do not have personal experience other then with SCAADL.

Thanks I will look in to it.

Just emailed my PEBLO for advice on how to apply for it. Hopefully i will hear some good news back soon.

Your PEBLO most likely won't know much about it. Your best resource would be the AW2 or Safe Harbor depending on your branch.

What is the aw2 or safe harbor and i am in the Army.

Nevermind i figured out what it is.

The service Wounded Warrior (AW2 for Army, Safe Harbor is Navy) is responsible for processing Scaadl applications once they are completed by the member and their doc. The army has a very detailed website for it in my link below.

Wife and I saw a VA Dr. yesterday for Caregiver Assessment. Looks like I qualify for moderate care. Waiting for the coordinator to contact my wife now.
