How long until th first VA payment generally?

Trying to get an idea of what to expect..

I retired on 28 Jan 13 and still haven't been paid by the VA. Reason being, they close your IDES claim when you retire/separate and open up a new claim to finalize your ratings. I have been told to expect 2-4 months from date of retirement/separation.

I'm sorry what's IDES?

That's lovely.. Going to make things a little tight financially..

IDES is the name for the MEB/PEB/VA integrated (medical board) process. Aka: MEB, med board, Chapter 61, etc.

On a high note- if you separate you will get severance pay. If you retire, you will get DoD retirement pay. I retired, and the AF had my first check deposited one month after I retired. Not sure how quickly the military gets severance pay to a sm, others here will chime in on that topic.

I was editing my post above when you posted. See above. It is advisable to try to start socking away a few bucks now to help tide you over during the transition period.

It'll be retirement. So during the 3-4 months we will receive DOD retirement pay until the VA payment?

That's helpful at least :) we have been squirreling some away due awhile

Yes, your retirement pay starts pretty quickly. Remember that the DoD retirement pay is for the full monthly amount and is paid once a month (on or around the first), unlike we are used to getting paid twice per month (half on the 1st, half on the 15th).
I know it's a bit early for you now, but you have to ensure that DFAS gets a copy of your DD214 asap when you retire, otherwise they will not build an account for you or pay you until you do.

VA out of Seattle is at least 6 months to a year before you will get final ratings after retirement.

One thing I have been told about by a soldier who was going through this process a few years ago is that you are eligible on seperation from the army for unemployment for a period of time. Is anyone here aware of that?

You can apply for unemployment and more than likely will be granted some benefit. Most states will use your retired pay as income and will reduce the weekly benefit. Once you get paid by the VA instead of DOD, the pay becomes disability income and takes away the reduction. It varies state by state, but this is what I have seen in NY, WA and CA

So how did you get your final ratings? Or are these your proposed ratings? I retired 25 Feb 2013 and same boat as you waiting, called VA and they pacified me by telling me 3 more weeks, my PEBLO and the VA said generally 47 days is average.

I called the VA and my VA rep at Ft. Meade, but it is probably like you said a year wait. i don't know who to believe because I hear so many different things from the VA and my local reps. The IDES book says we should be paid withing 30 days after getting out.

It would be nice if everything went how they tell us while we go through the IDES, once you separate/retire you will see that its a long wait for VA to be finalized.

I had my proposed rating complete in October 2012...PTDY and finally retired 25 Feb 2013. Didn't they already make a decision when they first looked at my case and gave me ratings? Ebenfits claim should be done in July 2013.

VA. I retired 6 months ago, still haven't received my final ratings.

Yea but you shouldn't use your timeline as an overall timeline, your the first I've heard 6 months to a year out of Seattle, most I've seen is 3 months

I only have proposed ratings at this time. My IDES claim was closed and the finalization claim opened on Jan 29 2013 (the day after I retired). Ebenefits is in "Pending Decision Approval" with an estimated claim complete date All the way through notification and complete) of 4/2/2013-5/3/2013.
