What Next/entitlements

I expect to hear back from the IPEB anyday and if I am either medically retired or severenced I was trying to figure out what my next step is....I figure the VA to get a disability rating and is there VA health coverage for myself and dependants if I am seperated instead of retired?

My info: 2W051 (AF MUNS guy)
2 L5-S1 discectomies

Missed a deployment due to medical treatments which forced a board on me (My doc didn't even want to do it) so here I sit at 17 years of service MSgt select looking at it all possibly coming to an end...

There is no medical coverage for dependents through the VA unless you are rated as what is termed "permanent and total". To achieve this rating you must first be rated either 100% overall by the VA or Idividually Unemployable.

As for the retired vs severance goes, ALWAYS fight for the retirement. You won't get to keep the money in either case, but with the retirement you get to keep your Tricare (there's you family medical) and the rest of bases privalages.

For more info on VA benefits you can go to the Veterans Benefits Network VBN - Message Board - Yuku

You generally cannot receive both DoD and VA compensation at the same time. The exception is if you have more than 20 years of service (Concurrent Retired and Disability Pay) or have a combat related injury (Combat Related Special Compensation).

Hope all goes well with the IPEB.

So if I get medically retired or put on the TDRL the medical retirement I get from AF will be offset by what the VA decides my disablity will be correct?
