I was found UNFIT (20% DOD and 40% VA) and I am due to be discharged on June 5th. How does my move work? Do we receive DLA? Are we treated as separating or retired? Can I get 1 car shipped and drive the other? This is a move from New York to Texas (H.O.R.)

Any help is wonderful, have a good weekend guys!

Far as I am tracking since your only 20% and not being retired then they will only move you back to your home of record or pay up to that amount for you. So if your home of record is only 500 miles from new York but your going to Texas then you will only get 500 miles worth of pay. But if your listed home of record is in Texas then you'll be good.

Ok just saw you put HOR after Texas. So yeah they should cover your move back

Do you get DLA when you separate or retire?

You don't get DLA when you separate or retire. You will be able to file a travel voucher after you get where you're going to be paid travel pay. Otherwise the move is completely out of your pocket.

The military returns you to your home of record when you separate or retire, so the move isn't out of pocket.

I'm looking for the actual reg in the JTR, but I'm like 95% certain you don't get DLA because your orders aren't ordering you away from your family, your orders are returning you to your home of record.

When you retire they'll move you just about anywhere, when you separate it's to the home of record. What I mean by out of pocket is that you have no money in advance or government credit card to use to get you there. You will get the money back when you file your travel voucher. They'll get your household goods there if you use TMO but if you choose to do a DITY again it will be out of pocket up front and then you'll get the money back afterwards. As for DLA it has nothing to do with being away from your family, it's a dislocation allowance that is paid when a member PCS's not retires or separates.

Also no TLA

My husband just medically retired March 28. We did a DITY move and got the advance which is something like 60% of the allowance.

(Army) You can request the advance for your travel costs. Like said above you will get around 60% and then will get the rest once you file final voucher once you are complete with your move. But like they also said, DLA isn't allowed because that is for getting things(utilities and similar) set up a new station when you PCS only.
