Hello @JakeTrilla

Here is an estimate using the info you provided.

1. Average high three 3836.10 x approved DOD disability percentage of 40% = 1534.44 Ret pay
(you also mentioned 90% DOD; have you applied for a correction to records?)
2. The retired pay is reduced to zero due to VA offset of >$4000
3. 9 years active duty equivalent x 2% = Longevity multiplier 18%. 18% x 3836.10 = 690.50 longevity portion of retired pay and a CRSC ceiling
4. CRSC @ 40% = the lesser of 690.50 OR the amount found in VA comp tables for 40% with applicable dependents same apples to 90% with applicable dependents. The lesser/lower amount is 690.50

Thoughts: The amount you reported as high three might be incorrect. The average high three = total of highest 36 months of pay divided by 36.
5. Information necessary for CRSC estimate: LINK <---

Ron

Edited to add: CRSC can never be more than the amount of retired pay offset by the amount of VA comp.

I calculated my High three based on two years of E-6 pay with more than 8 years time in service, plus one year E-5 with more than 6 years active service, and then divided by 3...
Hopefully that is the correct way to do it.

Also, so that I am aware of the process, is "9 years 0 months 0 days creditable service" the time to use or is it the 1464 points/360 (resulting in only 4 years of "true" years in service?

thank you again for all of your help!

Hello,

1. If Army, your retirement orders (first page) will show an item, DISABILITY RETIREMENT xx years xx moths xx days.
That is an accurate presentation of your active duty equivalent .

2. Whatever process you use compute to your high three—it is the total of your highest 36 months of pay divided by 36.
Sone use pay tables; some use LES. If you are already receiving retired pay @ 40%—
Gross retirement pay on DFAS RAS divided by 40% = average high three.

Ron

I'm just now getting to the NARSUM/PEB process. The latest numbers I have are:

E-6 (starting with 6 years TIS ) High three is approx 4000

My DoD disability rating is anticipated to be 80%

see attached points report

My VA compensation is 100% P&T: $3971.78
***
Myself, Spouse and two kids, total 4072.12 monthly***

My likely CRSC percentage is 80%

N/A

Yes – I was under the Blended Retirement System

So looking at your points it looks like you have about 4 year equivalent of active duty service correct? Just making sure I know that number. If thats correct your CRSC payment would be about $320 a month. That's the amount your earned longevity pension is worth and one of the caps for pay for CRSC. You can't get more than the combination of your VA compensation + earned longevity pension by law.

Your pay will be zero chapter 61 pension due to VA offset. Va compensation of $4,072.12 & CRSC compensation from DFAS of $320

Correct 4 year equivalent

How does the calc change if My DoD disability rating is anticipated to be 30%?

It all depends. If your total VA compensation is greater than your chapter 61 pension the DOD% won't affect the calculation since you basically are only getting VA disability. The CRSC is just restoring the value of your earned pension back to you.

so the previous $320 calculation is unaffected by dod%?
You can't get more than $320 for CRSC. That's the value of your pension. Dod% affects CRSC for other caps. For example if your DOD% equaled an amount higher than the combination of your VA compensation and earned longevity pension. If that were to happen your CRSC would be 0.00 every time. CRSC is there to claw back money lost due to the VA offset.

Gotcha. So as long as I medically retire, 30% or 75% dod doesn’t matter, because I’m at 100%VA.

I’m still going to see the same pension amount and am going to be capped at that for CRSC

Is that right?

That is correct if the 4k or so from the VA is greater than your chapter 61 pension amount.

Hi Ron,

Are you able to help me figure out mine?

I just got my ratings back. I’m AF if that matters. I’ve been researching this for hours and still can’t get my head around it.

I filled this out in accordance to your list of what to include:

1. Highest Pay $4234.5

1a. DoD Retirement

2. VA 100%

3. 10yrs 8mos

4. a. 100%

b. $4658.50

c. Spouse w/ 2x under 18

d. SMC’s TBD (unsure where to find)

5. TBD - no projected CRSC

6. I believe I just fall under chapter 61

7. No Redux/ I don’t think I’m there yet.

8. Yes BRS

I have not applied for CRSC yet because I just got my ratings today but I’m anxious to plan and budget for our PCS to the states. I haven’t lived there in 9 years!
