After years of going to mental health and trying to figure out what is wrong with me, I have been diagnosed with Bipolar or (unspecified mood (affective) disorder. I was told I would be put on a Medical Evaluation Board but I haven't heard anything; that was a few days ago. My command has been notified and wants to speak with me.

Does this mean I may not be put on a MEB after all? or is it a foregone conclusion that anyone with a Bipolar diagnosis is put on a MEB?

Has anyone been found fit for duty after being diagnosed with Bipolar? I read that it is a disqualifier from enlisting but what about someone who is already enlisted?

What are the current timelines for a MEB? I want to be as prepared as possible and this is all new for me so any info is greatly appreciated.

Bipolar is a condition that will be found unfit. I haven't found one case where a MEB for Bipolar or Schizophrenia was found fit. You are very early in the process. I have no clue on the timeline for the USMC. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Bipolar 1 is unfitting under all circumstances according to the retention criteria.

Bipolar 2 is usually unfitting but can be retainable depending on the career field etc.

Both are 100% nondeployable

Update…

I have finally been submitted to the medboard after a back and forth between my psych. He initially thought I was bipolar and now he says I’m not but still referred me. The issue is that he referred me under personality disorder, anxiety and depression. He also specifically stated that he doesn’t think I’m bipolar although the military social worker and two civilians have my diagnosis as bipolar.

I meet with the PEBLO tomorrow but I was wondering how does this help or hurt me? I know Bipolar 1 is automatic unfit but the fact that he refused to put it as a referred condition is irritating.

I heard that personality disorders don’t receive ratings? Is this true? What is the difference between the condition being referred as personality disorder vs bipolar when they’re both mental? Does this influence my rating or the decision of being unfit or fit?

This hurts you. Personality disorders won’t give you anything.

I recommend seeking a second opinion from another psychiatrist now, you can also do an impartial medical review when the actual med board happens. I also recommend studying the DSM V criteria for bipolar so you can more effectively communicate your symptoms. You will also get to talk to the VA examiner who can identify their diagnosis.

1. A second opinion is warranted.
2. The VA examiner's diagnosis will prevail when it comes to compensation.
3. Get and keep at copy of the military medical records where bipolar was the diagnosis.
