Calculating pay? A lengthy question…

I served 15 years enlisted and just over 4 years commissioned. Assuming I can drag this out to 20 years (suggestions?), I am curious how my retirement pay would look. If I were to simply retire and not MEB (so NOT fulfill the 10 year ADSO for enlisted to commissioned), I would submit UQR and then retire at an enlisted rank (determined by HRC via grade determination). Since an MEB is considered an “involuntary separation”, how would my High-3 be calculated? Would I receive retirement pay based on my current grade (O3-E, 6 months TIG), and given the benefit of the doubt for high-3 at that rank? Or would they still calculate retirement based on enlisted pay? Or neither?? I’m sorry if this question is jumbled/confusing. I’m a little all over the place these days. Thanks for your time.

Under your circumstances with ADSO…I’m thinking go for the MEB and then drag your feet in the MEB/PEB process to hit 20 if you can…if you medically retire you will retain your rank and if you hit 20 you would be eligible for CRDP. If you are not positive you can hit 20 by dragging your feet while in the med board process…you may wanna just hit 20…retire and take the rank calculation….but all this being said there’s a lot more to consider like how certain you are you would hit 30% in MEB/PEB to be retired vs severance ….and also what your overall VA rating will most likely be…cause those numbers will play a HUGE part in this decision as well as the long term. There are other things to consider like CRSC eligibility… I hope some of the other guys on here will chime in…cause you have options but they would definitely need to be considered with all the info and numbers.

Thanks for your response! BH provider is trying to MEB me for PTSD but I’ve been able to hold her off so far. Her contract is up in December and she may be moved to another facility. Lots of moving pieces in that regard (literally) but I also have herniated/bulged discs (no relief from pain management), torn hip labrum, etc. I would rather MEB, to be honest. I just don’t want to pull the trigger too early and am trying to wargame worst case scenario if I can’t delay the process a bit. Thanks again!

Right on. I completely understand. Something to keep in mind (and look more into if you’re not familiar) when your MEB referred condition is PTSD is that although it will most likely result in over 30% meeting the retirement threshold….it will almost always result in a TDRL retirement vs PDRL. Meaning you will have a mandatory re-evaluation after retirement anywhere from a few months to 3 years later before being placed on the PDRL. Which in some cases can result in a rating reduction on the referred condition and even severance. Search this forum inside and out and ask plenty of questions…the moderators on here are a wealth of knowledge. It was the number one resource for me during the process.

Luckily I was aware of the re-evaluation requirement, but I had no idea the period of re-eval varied so much! Thank you for sharing. I’ve been trying to dig into all the forums and posts. There A LOT here and, admittedly, feels overwhelming. Thank you!

...I do believe in most cases that re-eval occurs much quicker than 3 years…likely in the first 1 year from what I have heard. I was recently medically retired at 16+ years PDRL and I’m not speaking from direct experience there. Good luck with everything…it’s a big pain in the butt as I’m sure you can already appreciate.

Hello @DisgRNtld_731

Your retired pay computation will use your average high three base pay, which is the total of the highest 36 months of base pay divided by 36.

The high three is not necessarily the most recent 36 months.

Thanks for the response. I understand that’s how it usually works, however, I was unsure about being “penalized” for not fulfilling my ADSO.
