Case Timeline

Question for people who have started getting payments through the VA, how long did it take after your retirement date? And how soon does this second and final claim open up to where you can see it on the website?
Some people see the claim open the day before their official EAS, others the day after, some the day of. Some even see it a week or so after their sep, and unusually two weeks after.

As far as payments go, it's gonna depend on individual circumstance and VA case load. If you have hardship and you're flagged as such, the process can go extremely quickly like it went for me. I was flagged and my claim finalized in 8 days post-EAS. That definitely is not the norm, but I want you to know that you will be backpaid to the day after you separated. You will also get paid regularly if you took terminal PTAD/leave until that is dried up. If you struggle I recommend doing what I did and reaching out to NMCRS for a loan at 0%, then paying it back when the VA wraps up their process.

This was very helpful, thank you. I have about 1.5 months of bill money left and I’m currently on terminal without pay due to them making me pay back a portion of a bonus. Who would I reach out to about the hardship situation?

Go ahead and call your closest Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, or the one on your base. They'll make you itemize your expenses and you'll get approved for a loan from the Red Cross. Keep those documents, then when your official EAS passes upload those documents via QuickSubmit and call the 1000 number. Chances are you won't be able to afford a place to live without their help. You may get flagged as homeless. It'll speed up your case by a lot.

Claim closed today, November 1st at around 11 Eastern time. Does anyone know if there is a possibility I will still get paid for last month or will I have to wait until December 1st and receive back pay?

Assuming you still separated on the 29th of September, you'll be paid on December 1st (depending on your bank, if NavyFed usually the day prior) and you'll get retroactive payment back to October 1st. So you'll get money for october and november at the beginning of December.
