Good morning team - my CRSC approval letter was uploaded in iPerms as of this morning. I was hoping for some assistance in calculating the amount, as I didn't find anything in the approval letter.

Timeline:
28FEB2023: Packet mailed to HRC
02MAR2023: Email of receipt from HRC
25MAY2023: Requested update from HRC
01JUN2023: Approval date of CRSC on the letter
02JUN2023: Approval letter uploaded to iPerms

My CRSC approval amount is 60%

I was an O-4 with 13 years and 3 months of active service, retired with 40% DoD, and 100% permanent and total from the VA. I retired in September of 2022.

1. Amount of waived retired pay = 3153
2. High 3 monthly payment: 7882
3. 13.333 yrs x 2.5% = 33.33% longevity multiplier
4. 7882 x 33.33% = 2627 longevity portion of retired pay and one of the CRSC ceilings
5. VA comp amount: $3,971.78
6. CRSC Approval %: 60%

Do I use the VA% pay tables to anticipate the payment amount per month? That would be $1,528/month

Also any guidance on initiation of the backpay audit would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you ahead of time!

@Provis might get to this before I am finished.

1. 13 yrs 3 months = 13.25 , not 13.33
2. Your high three is accurate
3. You will receive the lesser (lower amount) of 1528 you found in the VA tables OR the longevity using 13.25%

Nice job on your part.

Ron

So with the longevity amount being $2,627 and the VA amount being $1,528, it would be the lesser (VA 60%)? Does any sort of CRSC offset come into play here?

Hello,

I did not review the VA comp tables myself for 60%, but you have a good understanding of the process, so I used your stated amount in the discussion (i.e., 1528).

Since there was no retired pay remaining after the VA offset/waiver/reduction--the amount from the VA comp tables is not reduced. In other words, based on your info you will receive:
--DFAS =1528
--VA = $3,971.78

Ron

Fantastic, thank you. The FB group related to this forum gave me some different information, that my CRSC would be offset by ~$500.

Any advice on how I initiate the backpay audit with DFAS? I've read some got it automatically, while others spent months getting through to DFAS.

I have received CRSC since its implementation and have had several back pay of CRSC experiences. Not once did I have to request an audit to receive my retro payments.

Full disclosure: More than a decade ago a DFAS CRSC clerk did the audit and failed to send it on to the VA electronically. Had to contact a U.S. Senator to get it repaired.

If any residual retired pay remained, it could reduce the amount of CRSC paid.

Ron - you're truly an asset, thank you for all of the information. My VA waiver completely offset my retirement amount ($3,153), so I receive $0 monthly for my retirement, but my 100% VA compensation. I assume that's what you mean by residual retired pay?

One thing I learned as an XO - is you have to understand and master the system before you do anything .. just trying to do my homework!

Hello @zackmack

Ref: "...so I receive $0 monthly for my retirement, but my 100% VA compensation. I assume that's what you mean by residual retired pay?"

Unfortunately, no.

VA compensation, is, compensation. It is not retired pay.

Example of residual retired pay
:

Disability retired pay = 3000
VA compensation =1600
3000 minus 1600 = 1400 residual retired pay (i.e., amount in excess of the required VA offset/reduction/waiver)

The combination of residual retired pay (if any) and CRSC, cannot exceed the longevity portion of retired pay.

Ron

added: Most CH 61 retiree cases do not involve residual retired pay

Edit number 2:
Earlier I said: "1. Amount of waived retired pay = 3153
2. High 3 monthly payment: 7882
3. 13.333 yrs x 2.5% = 33.33% longevity multiplier
4. 7882 x 33.33% = 2627 longevity portion of retired pay and one of the CRSC ceilings
5. VA comp amount: $3,971.78
6. CRSC Approval %: 60%

7. Retired pay 3153 minus 3971.78 VA amount = ZERO RESIDUAL RETIRED PAY
