Good afternoon, I received my Decision Letter this week and need help calculating, apologies in advance if I left out any necessary information.

1. Gross Retired Pay from RAS: $3289
2. DOD disability retirement %: 70%
3. Active Duty Equivalent: 13 years, 11 months, 26 days
4. VA Compensation %: 90% @$2698.65
5. Dependents by category & age: 1 spouse, 1 child under 18
6. SMC’s: SMC-K
7. Blended Retirement Plan: Yes
8. Approved CRSC %: 70%

You are maxed out for CRSC at $725.09. So that amount is what you will receive each month. That is how much you are losing out verse 28% longevity pension at HIGH 3 base pay of $4,698 and receiving VA compensation at $2,698.65

Just curious about something. Why did you change over to the blended retirement system? That hurt your overall compensation since your retirement longevity multiplier is 2% instead of 2.5%. It makes sense for those who are new but it looked like you must have been in for 8 years in the old legacy pension system when BRS plan was introduced. That put you at a major disadvantage since you weren't getting the TSP match of 5% for your first 8 years or so of service.

Thanks for the insight, Provis!

At the time BRS was introduced, I had 8 years in and wasn’t entirely sure I would stay in for the full 20. I opted for BRS because of the flexibility it offered—mainly the TSP matching. I started contributing 10% to my TSP right away, which gave me some peace of mind that I’d be building something substantial even if I didn’t hit 20 years.

I know the 2% multiplier under BRS isn’t as high as the 2.5% under the legacy system, but at the time, it seemed like a safer bet. Also, life changes quickly, and I wanted to ensure I was making smart decisions in case I transitioned out of the Army earlier. It’s a trade-off, but for me, the TSP match over the past six years helps balance things out a bit, my TSP account is looking pretty solid.

Thanks for the calculation!

You are welcome! Also, the numbers are only an estimate. The CRSC calculator I have is for the legacy system. Instead of calculating an exact amount I rounded up to 14 years which is technically 6 days more than you earned:) However it should be in the ballpark.

All, I retired in 2007 and unfortunately retired under the REDUX program so I have been earning 40% of my base pay since 2007, this will readjust when I turn 62 years old. I was approved for CRSC 90% last year unfortunately the 90% is actually more than my active duty pension because of the REDUX so I dont currently get the 90%. My question is will my CRSC automatically go up when I turn 62 and my military pension adjusts?
