CRSC computation case

I'm medically retired with the following stats:

12 years, 2 months of service
High 3: $5,300 per month
Army disability retirement = $3700
Years of Service retirement = $1612
VA rating: 100%
DA rating: 70%
CRSC rating: 90%

This is how I understand the computation:
(VA pay * CRSC rating) - (VA Pay - Army pay)
(3187 * 90%) - (3187 - 3700)
2868.3 + 513
$3381.3

Offset calculation
Years of Service rate = 12 2/12 * .025 * 5300 = $1612
Disability pay rate = 5300 * 70% = $3700
Offset = $3700 - $1612 = $2087

CRSC Entitlement = $3381 - $2088
TOTAL CRSC = $1293
Since this is less than the Years of service amount, then I would receive $1293

Please confirm my math and process is correct.

Thanks

This is what I get from FMR volume 7B chapter 63. I'm not 100% confident in it, but think its right.

3 caps on the pay. 630801, 630802, 630801 describes each cap.

630801) VA pay for the % of CRSC, dependents included, so 90% creates a cap of about $1900/month
630802) Retirement pay that is offset by VA. Your retirement pay is reduced by $3187 by VA offset.
630803) Retirement pay for years of service creates a cap for total DFAS check. So the check you receive from DFAS after VA offset ($513) lowers the comp you would have gotten from your length of service ($1612). $1612-$513 = $1099.

Lowest cap is 1099, so that should be the CRSC check.

Then what is the equation I used? I found that on a HRC explanation site for CRSC. That equation doesn't fit into the FMR paragraphs at all.

The DFAS calculator seems to be correct, but I dislike not being able to check the math.

Not sure where on the HRC site it lists the equation. I only saw a link to the FMR. What I think was off:
(VA pay * CRSC rating) - (VA Pay - Army pay)
(3187 * 90%) - (3187 - 3700)
2868.3 + 513
$3381.3

Problem with the first line is (VA pay * CRSC rating). Its better expressed as VA pay @ CRSC rating. 90% rate is around 1900, 100% rate is around 2900, before adding in dependents. You should be around 2000 or so with dependents at the 90% rate. 90% of 3200 is very different from 90% on the chart.

Second problem is you reversed the (VA Pay - Army pay). Its 3700-3187. This is also the new calculation to the offset. You have to decide which # is lowest before you reach this step. My explanation up there was off a little it looks like. Which ever number is lowest gets this reduction, still #3 is the one though. If CRSC is approved at the 50% rate, #1 would be the lowest and it'd get the 513 reduction.

The offset used to be calculated the way you had at first, but that was changed in 2013. 2000 - 2088 would leave you with $0. This was the case for most that received chapter 61 retirements. The 513, the amount you receive from DFAS, ends up being a little more fair. Congress put the offset in because they didn't want to give a chapter 61 retiree as much. CRSC was approved before CRDP, so was written to give extra to those who made it to 20 in hopes of placating those who were pushing for CRDP.

Your DOD disability retirement is $513.00 greater than your VA.

Your CRSC would be the lesser of the 90% VA amount and the LOS amount. From that amount, subtract $513.

Between DoD and the VA, you should get a combined amount that equals your total VA and your LOS retirement amount.

Hi Mike,
The difference between total estimated payout and VA pay is within $100 of my LOS amount.

The DFAS calculator provides a total of $1090. If I push my active duty to 20 years, it exactly equals the 90 percent VA disability rate. So the question is how the mechanics of the offset are calculated. It's enough to give a man a nosebleed.

Thanks, guys!
