Do points matter for a Guard member being MEB'd

I have over 12 years in the guard so far. I have earnd enough points for 6.5 years of Active Duty. Do the points even matter when figuring out my retirement. I'm allready rated at 50% for ptsd by the VA. Everything that I find online to figure this out is for Active Duty.

Thanks
Jerry

Points do factor in. When your transition point does your DD214 they will ask for any and all NGB23s. They will then enter those numbers into a calculation screen where ponts will be added as active time where appropriate.

If I remember correctly, these points are added into the worksheet for the final DD214

Case-in-point...

Upon discharge from Active Duty in the mid-1980s due to the acceptance of an Active Duty ROTC Scholarship, I enrolled into the USAR ROTC SMP. During my tenure within the USAR ROTC SMP, I accumulated monthly "drill" points and "annual training" points via Active Duty.

Moreover, a copy of my "Chronological Statement of Retirement Points" form was included in the DoD IDES MEB/PEB case file spanning over five years of USAR service.

In brief, it states "points shown below are a recapitulation of retirement credits as received by this Command. If there are errors or omissions, please return a copy of the detail points listing (on reverse) with your request for correction. Include copies of pay vouchers, record of attendance and correspondence course completions to substantiate your request for correction."

Thus, possessing well-informed knowledge is truly a powerful equalizer.

Best Wishes!

What is you don't transition at an active Army base? My State says that they do not do this portion of the finance part. Is it just DFAS then with the DA 2656.

Jerry, I would highly recommend that you get with your M-day S-1 and get a copy of your Retirement Points Statement (NGB 23A). Make the time to review what's on the statement vs. your LESs that you have received from the Guard. I have found that for the most part, my S-1 guys were pretty good at maintaining mine in order, but nevertheless do the math to make sure its correct. The points do matter! If you find discrepancies you should have enough time to get it fixed.

ABSOLUTELY GET WITH YOUR S-1 AND GET A CURRENT COPY OF YOUR RPAS (RETIREMENT POINTS) STATEMENT.

Mine was wrong. There were sooooooo many errors on that RPAS that it was going to really screw me out of stuff in the DFAS calculation of my PDRL retirement AND my NG retirement.

In order to correct many of the mistakes on my RPAS, I had to have PROOF that my RPAS was wrong!

I had to submit a form to the military finance archive department, and they were able to look at their archived LES records from 20+ years ago - still on microfische (sp?). They found the PROOF (LES evidence) I needed to get my current RPAS updated and corrected.

In my case, these archived LES records that they sent me, along with a letter with their letterhead on it, was the evidence I need to resolve the "missing time" of errors on my RPAS.

I was able to ADD OVER a YEAR of LOST TIME NOT RECORDED ON MY RPAS - AND THAT ONE LOST YEAR THEY FOUND ALSO QUALIFIED ME FOR A 20 YEAR NG RETIREMENT LETTER, TOO.

Fortunately for me, I found these errors on my RPAS during the last year I was in the IDES process, and was able to get my RPAS corrected in time - just prior to discharge and right before DFAS started their calculation process.

AND I received my 20-year NG retirement letter within 6 weeks PRIOR to my PDRL discharge.

For me, that missing YEAR that was found made a BIG difference for me, as it gave me enough qualifying time to get my 20-year retirement letter from the NG - not counting all the rest of the "missing" time they found.

It takes at least three months for this process to complete itself, so get your RPAS now and get all errors fixed BEFORE you IDES discharge to TDRL/PDRL/Severance/RTD.

ALL NG & AR SERVICEMEMBERS NEED TO GET A COPY OF THEIR RETIREMENT POINTS STATEMENTS AND LOOK IT OVER VERY CAREFULLY. IT IS A KEY DOCUMENT USED FOR CALCULATION PURPOSES BY DFAS AND IT IS THE KEY DOCUMENT USED TO ESTABLISH YOUR ELIGIBILITY FOR NG/RESERVE RETIREMENT.
