Does 100% VA PDRL = Permanent and Total?

First, I finally got my ratings. 80 DoD and 100 VA. I am so happy that my family will continue to have benefits and insurance. It is a huge weight off my shoulders.

Does getting 100% VA PDRL = P&T? I believe P&T forgives student loans, which for me would be HUGE!!!!

A 100% VA rating is not necessarily considered “permanent”.

P and T is Permanent and Total.

I have been rated 100% previously, but it was not considered permanent. The disability is now considered permanent.

Note: PDRL is permanent disability retired list. That is not a VA term; it is DoD’s.

I am confident others will comment on this.

Good luck,
Ron

How to check P&T status

The only way to know for sure is to review your VA Rating Decision Letter, which is mailed to you in an envelope via regular US mail. You can also review your VA Benefit Summary letter by logging into your eBenefits account. Once logged in, click “Manage” across the top, then “Documents and Records,” then “VA Letters,” and finally “Benefit Summary – Veteran Benefits.” Scroll down and check the section that says, “You are considered to be totally and permanently disabled due solely to your service-connected disabilities.” It will either say YES or NO in this block. This letter will also show if you are in receipt of Special Monthly Compensation due to the type and severity of your service connected disabilities.

Your letter given by the VA with your proposed ratings will state if P&T. If it isn't then you are probably just 100% VA. To be 100 P&T all of your conditions by the VA need to be static meaning they don't expect to change. You can request a code sheet after you get out to see how each condition is viewed.

My wife was 100% and then 6 months after getting out the VA changed it to 100% P&T. Only her mental health condition wasn't listed as static. She continued to seek treatment after medical retirement and since her condition didn't improve the VA changed that condition to static and she received a letter from the VA stating she was eligible for additional benefits such as chapter 35 which you can only get if 100% P&T.

I was prior service with a VA disability rating. eBenefits only shows the prior rating until I am actually discharged.

It doesn't really say anything except for this:

"13 For Department of Veterans Affairs (VA benefits, proposed eligibility to Dependents' Educational Assistance under 38 U.S.C. chapter 35.

...

Basic eligibility for Dependents' Educational Assistance is proposed as the evidence shows a combined permanent evaluation of 100% for service-connected disabilities."

Its weird because this in the middle of the list of explanation of service connected benefits.

Chapter 35 = P&T
