Hip Surgery

Hello,
AD Army 18 months,
I have been dealing with bilateral hips pain for over a six months. I have had MRIs in my both hips. and they found left hip lebaral tear and my right hip is very painful and needs to be surgery.
I have been on profile 251 days. My PCM did not mention about MED Board or permanent profile yet. I am in contanst pain but am not sure what a surgery will do to my chances of being medically retired at 30 % if I can even get that high.
If feasible, can I ask my provider (ctmc) recommending me a Med Board?
Should I get try to get a surgery during the MEB process if he recommend?

Thank you very much for the answers.

Hate to be that guy that says, “It depends” but it really does. You’ve got a lot of variables to consider like: What is your end goal? (Are you trying to stay in or get out of the Army?) Other considerations for thought; What is your current lifestyle, pain level(s), range of motion, current MOS, is reclass an option?, Who would perform the surgery and are they military/civilian?, What are his/her reviews, surgery at which hospital?, What type of procedure would be required, incision type (arthroscopic/ front/ back).

You my not know this, but once you’ve reached 250+ days profile for the same issue (I.E. your hip), your unit/BN/BDE medical providers will initiate the MEB. It happened to me. (Had 2 hips scoped then a hip replacement while AD Army.) Have had both military and civilian Ortho surgeons and good outcomes for both, so I’m happy with choices.

Most likely, If you AGREE to get out by MEB, it will end up being medical separation and NOT medical retirement. If you DISAGREE and fight the MEB, you’ll have to prove you’re capable of continuing service.

Just looking for some information.
I have low back pain and knee pain as well. I have had fifth finger fracture last year and it keeps acting out during the cold weather every single day. My lifestyle currently is painful because of these injuries. My medical provider did not start any phase Permanent profile or MEB even If I have 256 days on profile.
What should I do? I need some advice.
Thank you very much.

All they need is documentation of you have had a temporary profile for more than 250 or 270 days and they will initiate. Most likely they won’t inform you this is happening, but trust me, you’re already on their radar.

If you wanna stay in, get the surgery. I was pain free for 4 years after my surgery. If you want out, don’t get surgery, it’s up to you.

The other thing to consider is with your short 18 months TIS, a MEB is a gamble. They could say it’s pre existing/not service connected or rated at 0%.

Totally agree with tito on this one. I had the same injury during college football. Had the surgery, played two more seasons then went into the military for 11 years. Did it get sore, yes depending on the training and deployment. Up to you and what is best for you and or your family...
