How do I start the Medical Board Process?

I have over 26 years of service (23 active and 3 reserve). Over the last few years I have had significant mental health issues, including back-to-back limdu back in 2022. I am scheduled to see MTF Psychology at MHOOD Clinic on Monday morning. I was hoping to potentially start the process there.

Any help would be appreciated.

Typically medical will have to place you into the IDES process. You can discuss it with your provider.

That said ... There is little reason to go through IDES as you have over 23 years of active time. You can apply for a VA rating 6 months out from retirement on your own.

my guess is that he took a promotion that has an additional AD service commitment or a bonus.

Incorrect. No obligations, bonuses, etc.
If you would like MH help and be able to begin building your case for the VA and/or IDES, the Vet Center will see you if there is one near you. They can also do remote counseling. It's all kept private unless you release the info.

Do you have a reason to go through IDES over just retiring and submitting a VA claim?

I would seek treatment. Its up to your PCM to initiate a MEB and put you in IDES. However, if you want out just apply for retirement. There isn't a benefit to medically retiring when you have earned a regular retirement. If you want to stay in just seek treatment and leave it up to medical.

Is there any reason you want a MEB? You're talking about a process generally taking 6-12 months if everything goes smoothly.... You can just retire, and apply for VA disability once you retire. I am completely baffled by this post, especially with someone with as much time in service as you have. This shouldn't even be a question or consideration.

There is a lot of misinformation out there. I had quite a few higher ranking enlisted and officers asking the same questions. This board and it's great people helped me help many others. It appears he just wants to make the most informed decision.

Your provider will start it. Before that, they will likely try to treat your issues. Its not really something you have control over.
