IPEB. How long does this take??

I am currently stationed at Keesler AFB, I've been here two years now, and from the start of my medical boards until now, it has taken almost a year. During this year, I have not been allowed to go TDY, or deploy as I normally should be able to. I recieved a phone call saying my IPEB had been sent to AFPC on 12 January, and it would take approximately two months for me to hear anything back on that. I went and talked to my PEBLO earlier today, and he informed me that they were just now getting Octobers back, and I would not be receiving any information on my board until June. It seems a little excessive for this process to take this long, and its really starting to bother me. From the findings of my initial MEB, I was told I was going to be discharged, so why am I still waiting? If anyone has any info or ways to speed this up, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, what happens after I get the report back from AFPC?

herring1987,

Welcome to PEB. You should read some of the post of other Air Force people on this board. So far from what I can tell they are now in the November cases. So you PEBLO may be correct in the timeframe of June. Make sure you follow up with you PEBLO at least once a week. Staying in contact with your PEBLO is important. Some people on this board have not been able to get a hold of their PEBLO once there process is started. Plenty of other people on this board may be able to help with questions/concerns you have. I've found some good information just be reading the post of people on this site. If you have any general questions I may be able to answer you. Just let me know. You can also use the private messages to get a hold of me. Hang in there on the waiting. I've be in this whole process 9 months now.

Once a determination is made on your case and AFPC has agreed to it you will be given the option to agree or disagree with the findings. Based on the rating(s) assigned you will either receive severance pay, TDRL/PDRL or nothing (if Existed Prior To Service). Greater than 30% diability is some form of retirement (PDRL/TDRL), less than 30% is severance.

If found un-fit and you disagree with the IPEB findings, you will get a Formal PEB. This will add a minimum of a month onto your wait time but most likely a minimum of 2.

If found unfit and agree with findings you will start the discharge/retirement process and will usually get orders within 1-3 weeks.

Now, if a fit determination is made you can agree or disagree but just realize that justification must be provided as to why you believe you are unfit for continued military service. A fit finding appeal does not always reult in a FPEB.

tmo232 is correct. The process from reports on this forum, is that it is taking at least four months for results. Mine was just sent off today--for the second time. I don't expect results until July and separation until October. There is nothing you or anyone else can do at this point. I know it's not comforting, but hundreds are in the cue ahead of you, and many others like myself are behind you in the cue. The problem is, it doesn't end with the IPEB results unless your package was completed perfectly and you were rated for all the unfitting conditions you deserve. If not, you'll end up in another cue for the formal physical evaluation board. The process can take so long, you may develop other conditions, that by the time it hits the formal PEB, they send it back to the MEB to start all over again. This is exactly what happened to me and some others on this forum.

Some people are so frustrated at how long the process takes, they take the first low ball offer given to them (ie 10% severance) when from their posts on this board, they should have gotten a much much higher rating. The rating can affect the rest of your life...so I wouldn't be so much focused on the speed of the decision, but be more focused on the quality of the decision.

When you get the IPEB report from AFPC you have to make a decision...to accept the offer or appeal. That decision is yours alone, but we will be able to offer advice on that. But keep this in mind, statistics show that on appeal less than 1% of ratings are downgraded and 95% stay the same or are increased.

All of this depends on your individual case as no two are the same. Look out for yourself. You should already have a pretty good idea from your own research what rating you should be looking for.

herring1987,

these guys just gave you some of the most accurate, rock soild info. that you could get. i have been in the DES since oct 2007. that's no bu!!s#!t. my unit dropped the ball so many times i can't count. i have wanted to give up many, many times. this board is a lifesaver. i too have seen many personal friends take the 1'st low-ball offer and run. now they are spending months/years to gate their rating up'd. i would use this time to educate yourself to the system and ensure that all your med. documentation is correct and u-to-date. i would also work on your VA claims and social security. when i was 1'st found unfit, i applied for social security and started working my VA claims w/the VFW. i was denyed SS and appealed. i switch to the DAV while the VA claim dragged on. was denyed SS again and appealed again. switched from the DAV to the military order of the purple heart. i hired a lawyer for social security (which i suggest people do right from the get-go). by this time it was fall of 2009. i got a hearing w/an admin law judge around oct 2009. went to court and was awarded total disability w/back pay from the date of injury (aug 2006). all this time i was till getting the run around w/the MEB. in jan of this year i finally got a comp & pen hearing w/the VA for 1 of my claims. the the AF decided to send me to wilford hall to start the MEB from the beginning w/evals from thier docs. over the weekend i received an award letter for 10% on one issue and 0% on another, i was just happy to get something before my MEB. just for GP. called my MOPH rep to start the appeals process.

where i'm going w/all this is i used all that time (about 4 years) they gave me and focused on other things. the point is things could be alot worse. if we give up we are doing everyone here a great injustice. i still have my days where i want to give up. right before i went to lackland i was ready to throw in the towel. after talking w/jason and a few others here, i was right "back in the fight". read some post here and i'm sure you'll feel alot better. use this time on something else. don't give up. i know: "easier said then done" hang in there bro. good luck and keep us posted!

herring,

I am Air Force stationed at Pope AFB, it took 4 months and 2 weeks from the date my package was sent to the IPEB in Texas. I know it's not comfoting information but think of it as time to prepare for your future. As already stated although patience isn't easy it's worth waiting and fighting for the decision you deserve. There are plenty of people that have been stuck in this system for many many months and even years. Hopefully your package included everything and you get a decision that is fair. Good Luck!

The findings are very confusing, but if it's true I'm very happy.
They rated me at 10% for my shoulder, yet put "permanent retirement" on the form.
I have almost 13 active duty and 25 total (including Guard time) which normally means a severance due to rating being below 30%.
