Hi,
My husband just recently found out about CRSC and filed a few weeks ago. He is anxious to find out an estimate on what he will receive if approved. The pertinent information is as follows.
Medically retired from army 50%
100-% P&t from VA
Served 11 years 3 months
High 3 is $2882
Combat related conditions are at least 50 with CAB to back but possibly 80 depending on what is on the VA code sheet (we already requested FOIA but waiting).
If anyone could help us with a calculation, I would be very grateful.
Thanks!!!

Hello,

The following is needed for an estimate:

1. Average high three base pay OR better, the GROSS RETIRED PAY from your DFAS RAS. State which.
The average high three base pay is the total of the highest 36 months of base pay divided by 36.
2. DoD disability retirement percentage
3. Active duty equivalent (this info is found on your retirement orders as DISABILITY RETIREMENT xx years xx months xx days
4. VA compensation
— percentage
—amount
—dependents by category and age
—any SMCs ?
5. Did you have the blended retirement plan?
6. Approved CRSC percentage

The hypothetical longevity portion of retired pay is a consideration. Some of the ceilings :

—CRSC cannot exceed the amount of the waived retired pay.
—CRSC cannot exceed the amount of the approved CRSC percentage (amt in VA Comp tables).
—CRSC cannot exceed the dollar amount of the longevity portion of retired pay.
—CRSC when combined with residual retired pay cannot exceed the longevity amount.

Basically, his longevity computation will include:

1. Active duty equivalent x 2.5% (2% for blended retirement) = longevity multiplier

2. Average high three base pay x longevity multiplier = hypothetical longevity portion of retired pay

3. Your CRSC will be the lower amount
(hypothetical longevity)
OR
amount of the approved CRSC percentage (amt in VA Comp tables)

If you have residual retired pay from the VA offset, the combination of it with CRSC
cannot exceed the longevity amount.

1) High three was 2882
2) 50% DOD medical retirement
3) 11 years 3 months
4) 100 % Va $4098.87
Spouse 1 child 17 years old
5) no
6) 50%
Thank you!

Hello,

Using your info and including the high three average base pay 2882:

a. 2882 x 50% DoD =1441 retirement pay using Disabilty percentage
11.25 active duty equivalent x 2.5% = 28.13% longevity multiplier

b. VA offset leaves no residual retired pay

C. 2882 x 28.13% = 811.55 hypothetical longevity amount and a CRSC ceiling

d. CRSC @ 50% using VA comp tables = 1255.16

e. Using your info, the CRSC payable = 811.55

Opinion: The average high three base pay amount you provided might be incorrect. The average high three base pay is the total of the highest 36 months of base pay divided by 36.

Also, the gross retired pay on his most recent DFAS RAS (if not earlier than December 2023) divided by DOD disability percentage = contemporary average high three base pay

So just curious why the amount is based off the longevity and not the actual percentage for CRSC? Thank you so much for your help!

Hello,

Addendum for @Michmon12

Special Rules for Chapter 61 Disability Retirees: According to law, members retired for disability under Chapter 61 of title 10 United States Code must have the CRSC entitlement reduced by the amount their military disability retired pay exceeds the retired pay they would otherwise be entitled to for retirement with at least 20 years of service. Disability retirees with less than 20 years of service must have the CRSC entitlement reduced by the amount their military disability retired pay exceeds the amount calculated as for a regular retirement (i.e. 21⁄2 percent x years of service x pay base). Note: this may result in a significant reduction or elimination of CRSC for members with few years of service.
