Hello, I just wanted to say Hello. I'm a 41-yr-old Marine that just underwent my 2nd back surgery (fusion L4-5). My recovery hasn't gone as well as expected and it seems highly likely that I will be discharged. I joined this forum in order to learn about the VA diability program.

Hello there, and welcome to the site. there's enough information here, I hope you find what you're after.

welcome aboard marine,
i'm in the same situation w/the back as you. injured my back in august 2006. had 1 surgery (micro-discectomy) sept 2006. my back was worse. had l5-s1 fusion in may 2007. so i'm almost 2yrs out post-op and feel worse than ever. and i have tons of residual effects. notifed of MEB in nov 2007. got UNFIT results back in jan 2008. so it's been a long painfull road. i would suggest to be prepared for the worse (MEB), unless that's what you are shooting for. as soon as i got hurt i knew how bad my back was and have seen so many people get out w/back injuries w/o surgery, so i expected it. i would suggest to ENSURE that everything is well documented and keep copies of EVERYTHING. i also filed my VA claim once i got hurt w/the DAV, just case i had that feeling where my case was going to go.
imo. you have come to the right place. there is so much info. here and rest assured it's accurate and more accurate then some of the info. that you will get from you own unit and med. section. feel free to ask questions. everyone here is awsome. and like i said, your issue is very similar to mine so feel free to contact me @ ANY time ([email protected]). good luck and stay strong!

trose,

Welcome! I hope you find the site helpful and I hope your case goes well. Ask any questions you might have.

trose10000,

You definitely need to learn about the VA disability program. But first you need to learn about the Defense Disability Evaluation System (DES). This is where you will get disability benefits from DoD if discharged from the Marines due to your back. Congratulations! You are at the best site to learn about the DES.

Mike

I spend alot of time just reading the posts and rarely reply, there is so much info here and probably the closest you will come to what the military might do, thanks to maparker and jason, as well as others. Good luck, as we are all pretty much in the same boat here or have been . Jim H.
