motodog,
Personally, I think his comment about his bowling being on par with being in the Special Olympics was distasteful and I am glad that he repudiated it and called Tim Shriver (Chairman of the Special Olympics) to apologize.
"On his way back to Washington on Air Force One, Obama called the chairman of the Special Olympics, Tim Shriver, to say he was sorry — even before the taped program aired late Thursday night.
"He expressed his disappointment and he apologized in a way that was very moving. He expressed that he did not intend to humiliate this population," Shriver said Friday on ABC's "Good Morning America." Obama, Shriver said, wants to have some Special Olympic athletes visit the White House to bowl or play basketball.
Still, Shriver said, "I think it's important to see that words hurt and words do matter. And these words that in some respect can be seen as humiliating or a put down to people with special needs do cause pain and they do result in stereotypes."
Obama apologizes for Special Olympics gaffe
All that aside, I want to remind everyone that I have a policy of keeping the site non-political (see the Social and Off-Topic Forum description "A place to discuss anything that doesn't fit anywhere else! No politics, and no personal attacks!"). I am happy to provide a place for people to discuss issues of the day. I have a lot of very strong political feelings on a number of topics facing our great Nation, but have instituted that policy to keep this a place where Military members and Veterans can come for information and not be turned off by political discussion. I do not think that your post crossed the line, but I wanted to mention all of this in anticipation of replies to your post. I will kill the thread if any replies get heated.
I also recognize that "no politics" is a vague sort of standard, especially since many of the issues we discuss on this site are, by definition, related to politics and what our leaders institute for laws and policies. Fair commentary on actions and policies is fine, in my view, I just remind everyone that my concern is keeping this a place where everyone is welcome as long as they are here for the right reasons. All this said, if the members of this site want a place to discuss these type of issues, I would consider making a "hidden forum" for people to discuss political issues. I say this with the caveat that if folks want this and I set this up, if it detracts from the community, I will kill it.
Any thoughts/comments?
