I am PDRL DoD
If I am getting combined 5000 from DoD and VA now, if VA lowers my rating, will I still get 5000?

So will I still have 5000 if VA decides to lower my VA rating?

Without knowing what you make for DOD and what you make on the VA side, it's hard to say.

The spreadsheet in the link I posted will probably be able to help you.


Note, that if you're NOT eligible for either CRSC or CRDP, that means you're only allowed to collect either your DOD comp pay or your VA comp pay, one or the other; not both.

CRDP would basically mean you're a 20 year active duty retiree, or 20 year reservist over the age of 60

CRSC is for anyone who got injured either by an instrumentality of war, or during training in combat-related conditions (Live fire FTX, parachute jump, ect)

CRSC by law CANNOT be greater than what you would make if you were eligible for CRDP.


But again, The important takeaway here is if you're not entitled for either of those, then your compensation will be either your DOD disability, or your VA disability; your choice.

Just one, not both.

Also remember that VA compensation is tax-free, DOD is not.

I was 100% from DoD, 75% of my high 3 = 5000
Yes. If your VA goes down your DOD will increase. If you have a pension for Chapter 61 for $5,000 then you will get that much each month regardless of your VA compensation. The only thing that changes is the offset amount. The higher the VA rating the less you will owe taxes on. If you were retired with V3 code for combat related there is not difference since your chapter 61 retirement is exempt from federal income taxes. If that's not the case you want to have VA compensation as high as possible since its not taxable.

Based on your info:

1. 5000 gross retired pay/ 75% = 6666.66 high three
2. 5000 gross retired pay minus 3500 amount of VA comp = 1500 residual retired pay which you keep
3. At this point, you receive a total of 5000 which is 3500 from VA and 1500 from DFAS
4. Example scenario: VA becomes 2000
5000 minus 2000 = 3000 residual DoD retired pay and 2000 VA compensation. Just as Provis outlined.

There are many cases where an individual will receive some disability retired pay (plus VA comp) without the assistance of CRDP (or CRSC for that matter). The offset of which you spoke is dollar for dollar in the amount of VA compensation received. Often there is residual retired pay that the retiree keeps.

See below:

Thanks for the response, I was wondering what I was missing, and your post cleared it all up.

Even though I've already gone through a medboard, I am still interested in learning as much as I can about the process; I appreciate the help.
