I am not the sailor, but rather, I'm a friend trying to understand why this person isn't undergoing a medical board. From my understanding, a type 1 diabetic diagnosis is automatic grounds for a medical evaluation board, so I am curious how the sequence of events listed below has unfolded:
FTS sailor on their first contract; was in a skill bridge program; admitted to a civilian ER; diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D); command pulled the sailor from the skill bridge; command informed him that they spoke with Great Lakes and his condition is "stable," and no medical board will be conducted; his contract ends within 2-months; will be allowed to separate as planned; never seen and evaluated by a Navy physician.
As laid out above, this person was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, which led his command to pull him from his skill bridge program. He was planning on separating at the end of his contract, which is about two months from today (May 20th). The sailor was then told that he wouldn't be undergoing a medical board evaluation since his condition was "stable." This information was relayed to him via his HM1, who claimed the information was coming from Great Lakes. The sailor has been told that he can separate as intended at the expiration of his contract. All of the above has occurred within the last two months.
Disclosure: I was diagnosed with T1D while serving. I was immediately placed on LIMDU and underwent an MEB, which inevitably led to TDRL placement, and proceeded with a medical separation.
