Question about enlistment bonus

Does anyone know how they handle the money yet to be paid on an enlistment bonus? I received an enlistment bonus of 20,000. I got the first 10k when I arrived at my first duty station. The rest is given for the rest of my initial enlistment on my year mark. I signed for 6 years and have another 2.5 to go but I am getting medically discharged.

So what I'm wondering is if they will just not pay the remaining amount, if i will get the rest of it since my unfitting conditions were service connected, or in the worst case if they will recoup the amount I was already paid. Any info would be much appreciated, I can't find anything online.

There is no recoupment of a reenlistment bonus if you are retired medically (as long as your injury did not take place due to misconduct) I just received a $5K before taxes payment, two days ago.

Once you are medically retired, the payments stop.

In my own example, here was the situation. Reenlist 2009014 $20K bonus, $10K up front on my 1st date of new contract. Contact stated $5K after two years and $5K after three more years.

My second installment was paid while I was in the WTU 20110121 $5K (before taxes) and my third installment was paid while I was in the WTU 20140121 $5K before taxes.

As long as I do not get discharged for misconduct I will not face recoupment.

I have some regulations I can point you to when I get home and on a real computer. What branch of service?

Thanks. I am active duty army. I was really just more worried if they would recoup it but I assumed they wouldn't

Sorry for the delay. I'm Air Force so I don't know the Army Regulation that applies to you guys, but I know in the Air Force regulation all it says is to reference a specific DODI for instructions. That publication is DODI 1304.29 (LINK) and you are looking for section E1.5.3, E1.5.3.2, and 1.5.5, and 1.5.5.2. I am not sure how they make the determination for that last section, but that would be your reference. You can also use DOD FMR (Finance Management Regulation) 07A 09. Here it is mentioned in 090205 D, 090401 B, 090404.

There may be some other information in those documents that apply to you so I would recommend reading through parts of them. I'm in the same boat so I've been researching for a while and compiling this info. Good luck with everything.

I can't find and active link to the FMR so I have attached it. Let me know if that doesn't work.

I'm glad they kept paying you the bonus. Here's my situation, whatdya think?

15k bonus. Received $7,500 after one year. I was due to receive another payment of $1,500 Oct 10th 2014. I am retiring 28 Oct. It appears that they are not going to pay me the $1,500, since I haven't seen anything on myPay yet. I know by law, they cannot recoup what they have paid me, but do you think that have to pay me the $1,500? I think it comes down to the whole "being qualified" etc.

Financial Management Regulation, same regulation used for all branches of service. Volume 7A is all about military pay. Chapter 2 of that volume is about bonuses. Table 2-1 goes over the rules in an easy way. Rule 2 on that table says if you get discharged for disability they owe you the unpaid portion of your bonus.

Appreciate the help.
Unfortunately, mine was not incurred in a combat zone, etc. But I did make it thru my second year, which I would think I would have to get paid that portion for the year.
