Severance Pay Question

Husband was med boarded last year with severance pay. His final out day was 2 Feb. We received a payment Feb. 7th but it was less than half of what the amount was supposed to be. I know it is taxed, however, I don't know if we will receive another payment or what. 12,085.00 is what is listed on his DD214, we got 5100. When we talked to finance before we left Germany they guy said if we hadn't received payment by 2nd week of March to start calling. He did say we may receive more than one payment but he wasn't sure. He wasn't real helpful. I don't even know where to go to find out if this was a partial payment or not. Any suggestions or comments? I also know that we can get the taxes back, etc. We have the form to fill out. This is a great sight and it was a great place for info while we were going through the process.

What was the title of the payment. Maybe it was for something else, getting severance in 5 days, sounds unlikely.

SEPARATION/REENL/EXT PAYMENT TO EFT120207

This is what was at the bottom of the latest "deposit notification" on his LES. So did they pay him wrong? We didn't expect it that soon either. He did get his regular pay deposit on 1 Feb. We weren't expecting it nearly that soon. That's why something just doesn't seem quite right with it. With all the days of leave and Terminal leave we actually out processed and left Germany on 13 Dec.

OK. hubby called finance today. This was part of the severance pay. We are in audit mode now and will receive the rest of the money as soon as that is done.

This is what I was told by numerous people at MEB Legal and the VA: upon seperation you will recieve 50% of your seperation claim and once your temporary retirement is changed to un-fit or permenant retirement you will recieve the secondary payment.

What if you are not retired and you are simply medically separated? Do you still only get 1/2 or the whole lump sum?

Seperated is retired, just terminology... Either you get temporary or permanent retirement (medical seperation), there is no other way around it. Temporary implies that if you can get better, the military will take you back with-in 5 years of seperation. Permanent means no way they will take you back.

If you are placed on TDRL or PDRL then you dont recieve a severance payment. There is a HUGE difference between medically seperated and medically retired. 30% and above is a medical RETIREMENT...less than 30% is a medical seperation with a severance check (basically a buy out) no medical, nothing
