With these new rules for ptsd at 50% and getting check at 6 months does the excluded you from getting the severance pay Im new to this and am just wondering I have my phase the on the 7 of November. I am also getting med boarded for tbi and sleep apnea how does this work.
 
It seems as though my husband has some of the same concerns as you- maybe you could help me understand the process you went through to be med-boarded out.
My husband has been deployed twice to Afghanistan and three times to Iraq over the course of his 7 years in the Army. He was diagnosed with PTSD back in January and now TBI. He also has a bulging disc and severe back pain. His therapist told him she was giving him a P3 profile and that with his "issues" he would most likely get 100% disability. My questions are- how long will this all take, how does the board figure a percentage, what could the pay possibly be, & would myself and our 5 month old daughter still be covered under healthcare. I know this is alot...but I am so nervous about all these changes, especially with our little girl. Thanks!

The length of the MEB/PEB process can take some time depending on the conditions: the doctors available, the workload at the PEB, and other variables. My estimation is that 6 months is a fair time-frame (plus or minus a couple months depending on those previously mentioned variables).

The pay is based firstly, on whether or not your husband is medically separated or medically retired. From the sounds of it, it sounds like he will be medically retired - at the very least due to PTSD which carries a 50% rating, placement on the TDRL, and re-evaluation in 6 months time from discharge.

Receiving a rating under 30% means that one is medically separated with a one time severance pay (2 x base pay x years of service) and no benefits (tricare, px, commissary, etcetera).

Receiving a rating over a 30% entitles one to nearly all the benefits of a 20 year servicemember (monthly pension based on the disability percentage and the high-3 of your husband's service e.g. the average of his 3 highest paid years along with Tricare Standard/Prime benefits for you and your daughter - with a small monthly premium).
